Position Overview
This position is responsible for providing general support within the District Fire Department to include maintaining department readiness for emergency call response; maintaining facilities and equipment in proper state for readiness; conducting routine fire department clerical, recordkeeping and reporting functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleans and maintains fire stations, grounds, apparatus and other equipment; makes minor repairs and adjustments to apparatus and equipment.
- Receives and/or prepares various documentation (forms, checklists, reports, correspondence, etc.) processes, completes, and/or forwards as appropriate.
- Performs routine fire department clerical, record keeping, and reporting functions.
- Responds to routine requests for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, the public, or other individuals.
- Participates in and conducts training classes.
- Maintains department readiness for emergency call response.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years directly related, progressively responsible experience in the Fire Department; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid, State of North Carolina driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of County and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Knowledge of the fire district including business and commercial operation, terrain, natural hazards and conditions, roads, and other potential fire hazards.
- Knowledge of fire department practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities.
- Knowledge of fire equipment operation and maintenance and skill in operation.
- Skill in operating computers and various office equipment.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to prepare and submit clear and concise reports.
- Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
- Ability to perform additions, subtraction, multiplication, and division; to calculate decimals and percentages; to utilize fractions; and to interpret graphs.
- Ability to exert a wide range of physical effort in fire suppression and first responder activities.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, members of the general public and other groups involved in the activities of the County as they relate to the department.
