What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Utility Worker III - Maintenance position at Jackson County (NC)?
This position assists other crew members with maintenance and facility repairs.
Grade 18
Prefer a candidate with more than two years of experience in a skilled trade (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC or masonry) and/or completion of skill or trade related certificate, diploma, or degree program.
Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid, State of North Carolina driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Grade 18
- Operates a variety of maintenance tools and equipment including power and hand tools, drills, grinders, compressors, gauges, meters and impact tools and may include grounds equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, blowers and tractors as needed.
- Assists with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC and masonry repairs and installations.
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks.
- Assists Emergency Management with logistics during and inclement weather or emergency situations, such as snow plowing and salting of Jackson County roads, property, parks, and buildings.
- Assists with beautification and decoration of County buildings and grounds for special events.
- Performs building maintenance as needed.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Talking 1: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Talking 2: Shouting in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
- Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
- Visual Acuity 2: Including color, depth perception, and field vision.
- Visual Acuity 3: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
- Visual Acuity 4: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
- Visual Acuity 5: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
