Position Overview
This position provides clerical and animal support, adoptions and customer service to this unit. This position is primarily supervised by the Animal Control Supervisor I. This position will assist at the animal control shelter in the care of animals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- General office duties which include receptionist
- Answer telephone calls and route calls to appropriate person
- Compose and mail various correspondence (letters, memos, etc.)
- Complete daily balance process of monies and make deposits as a backup
- Responsible for receiving animals into the JCAS and completing documentation associated with these animals
- Releases animal to claiming owners, assists with adoptions of unclaimed animals to the public
- Vaccinates, performs medical tests, and administers necessary medication to animals in the care of JCAS as needed
- Ensures that all treatment given to the animal is accurately documented in the animal’s medical record per state law
- Assists at Animal Control Shelter in the care of animals by arranging for the adoption of animals; the care and feeding of animals in custody; and the cleaning and maintenance of animal cages, exercise and social time for animals
- Responsible for establishing and maintaining good relations with all sectors of the community, including humane and private veterinary groups on behalf of the Animal Shelter and County government
- Participating in Public health Preparedness activities as directed by agency management; this employee will be expected to work as needed during public health emergencies, which may result in extended hours and long work shifts.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from high school with minimum of 3 years of office/clerical experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices
- General knowledge of and ability to use correct spelling, punctuation and specialized vocabulary; ability to proofread
- General knowledge of office accounting and record keeping procedures, mathematics and their application in the work environment
- Knowledge of County and State laws relating to Environmental Health and Animal Control.
- Knowledge of geographic areas of the county.
- Ability to work/operate office equipment; word processing and data entry skills are a must.
- Ability to learn and apply a variety of guidelines applicable to the work process
- Ability to use a variety of office equipment
- Ability to work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties
- Ability to record and compile information based on general guidelines
- Ability to balance and reconcile figures
- Ability to screen communications based on predetermined guidelines
- Ability to gather and give information and instructions regarding the work process and procedures
- Ability to learn to use specialized office equipment
- May require ability to coordinate work of other support staff, student workers or volunteers
- Job requires comprehensive knowledge of county and state laws relating to animal and rabies control.
- The position requires mental concentration and visual attention.
- Thorough knowledge of animal collection and disposal method.
- Accuracy and attention to detail is a factor in this position.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing state laws and county ordinances pertaining to animal and rabies control
- Fundamental knowledge of animal health and behavior and the ability to administer required medications, vaccinations, and tests
- Certified in rabies vaccinations
