What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Nurse II - Smokey Mountain Elementary position at Jackson County (NC)?
Maintain the health and dignity of students in grades K-12, by competently managing and delivering healthcare services for students that present with acute illness/symptoms or have established care plans provided by a licensed medical provider. The PHN II School Nurse will provide these services within the framework of public health and scope of practice on a Registered Nurse, which focuses on population health, education, prevention and mitigation.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with 30 minutes for lunch. *This position is a 10-month position. Occasional work late evening or weekend work may be required. On call 24/7 for any unusual surveillance activities or events. The person in this position is required to work nights and weekends when necessitated. - This role requires interaction with children in varied age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds, different races/ethnicities and children that speak American English as a second language. The PHN II School Nurse must create a safe space for all students and ensure that personal bias and or stereotypes do not interfere with or influence services provided.
- The PHN II School Nurse will follow the nursing scope of practice as outlined by the NCBON and the North Carolina School Nurse Manual.
- The PHN II School Nurse will be responsible for completing and reporting all required documentation and data collection per policy.
- The ideal candidate will have excellent assessment and communication skills as well as the ability to prioritize tasks and identify tasks for delegation to UAP (Unlicensed Assistive Personnel).
- The PHN II School Nurse will need to communicate effectively and clearly with students, parents, school administration, public health administration as well as the school health and public health teams.
- The PHN II School Nurse will provide healthcare services per the written plan of care provided by a licensed medical provider, report any adverse reactions or any unexpected/abnormal findings.
- The candidate will complete PHN II credentialing training and any other applicable public health related trainings as well as trainings required to work in the school system.
- The PHN II School Nurse must be flexible with their schedule as there may be times they will be floated to a school that may differ from their assigned location.
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one-year of professional nursing experience.
Additional Training/Experience:
Individuals employed in a local Health Department without a B.S. Degree which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or a Master’s in Public Health, will be required to complete an introductory course in principles and practices of public health nursing sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services- Division of Public Health within one year of employment as a condition of continued employment in accordance with Health Services Commission Rule, 10 NCAC 46.0301.
Maybe required to attend conferences that require travel within and out of the state.
Equivalent Training and Experience:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of North Carolina. School Nurse Certificate Preferred.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
- Associate degree in nursing from an accredited college; Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred

- Must be reliable and able to be on campus/ at work at scheduled times
- Must be flexible with schedule, work assignments and changes in the plan of care
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification or obtain within 60 days of employment
- Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, team members and school administration
- Must be experienced in electronic documentation and communicating electronically
- Must have excellent assessment skills
- Must be able to prioritize care based on assessment and plan of care
- Must be able to work independently
- Must be able to collect and report data as required
- Must be able to work within deadlines
- Must demonstrate cultural humility when interacting with those of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- Must be able to provide care to students of varied ages, and developmental stages, and who may present with chronic illnesses, and mobility challenges
- Must be comfortable using DME (Durable Medical Equipment) including but not limited to wheelchairs, crutches, and protective head gear, etc.
- Must be comfortable using various routes of medication administration

Salary : $42,044 - $57,178
