Jackson County Roads is looking to recruit a skilled individual to help inspect and maintain its 304 bridges throughout the region.
The Job
The successful candidate must have carpentry skills, some heavy equipment operation experience, be proficient with hand and power tools, and enjoy physical labor. This individual will work alongside on Lead for most of the year, maintaining an extremely important part of the County’s infrastructure (Bridges), but will also work on larger crews performing many other road maintenance tasks as needed. The successful candidate must possess a strong work ethic, take pride in their work, and have the desire to perform a very important public service!

This is a full-time day shift position in the Roads Department – Road Maintenance Division located at 200 Antelope Road, White City, Oregon.

I. Position Summary
Builds bridges and other structures; inspects and notes bridge defects; repairs and replaces bridges, forms and rails; and performs general bridge maintenance work. Performs a full range of duties with only occasional instruction or assistance within a framework of established procedures.
II. Examples of Essential Position Duties (The following duties represent some of the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.)
- Builds new bridges; modifies, widens and repairs existing wood and concrete bridges.
- Inspects wood members and note defects; removes rotten and broken parts of bridges including wood, caps, decking and posts.
- Prepares, maintains and submits a variety of records and reports; prepares inspection reports including findings, defects noted, and needed repairs; completes time entry and production reports.
- Constructs storm drain and culvert boxes.
- Installs rock retaining walls and gabions in steam beds.
- Demolishes existing wood structures and replaces with new concrete bridge.
- Performs regular bridge maintenance; cleans drains, removes debris from decks and sidewalks, expansion joints, cocker bearing and caps.
- Operates heavy equipment including dump trucks, hydraulic jacks, crane and backhoe to carry and lift new bridge structures into place, dig ditches, delivers building materials and remove demolished structural materials.
- May serve as crew leader in absence of Senior Bridge Carpenter.
- Adheres to best management procedures that pertain to water quality and threatened and endangered species protection.
- Acts as a mentor and trainer for other department personnel.
- Adheres to regulatory requirements, collective bargaining agreements, County and departmental policies and procedures, required trainings, as well as safe work practices.
- Develops and maintains effective internal and external working relationships at all levels.
- Has regular and reliable attendance. Overtime may be required.
III. Minimum Requirements (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following requirements, physical demands and/or working conditions)
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent AND two years of related work experience; OR
- Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.
License, Certificate or Other
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Possession of a valid, Oregon Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tank endorsement within six months of hire and an acceptable driving record. Crane Certification within 12 months of hire.
IV. Other Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires extensive knowledge of concrete and heavy timber construction; knowledge of basic construction and maintenance techniques. Ability to use and operate a variety of heavy and small construction equipment, machines and hand tools including drills, saws, backhoe, compressor, generator, trowel, float, screed, pump, dump and boom trucks, paint gun, jackhammer, acetylene torch and stud and nail guns. Ability to read and understand blueprints and plans; inspect bridges for compliance with safety standards and operational requirements; plan and develop cost estimates and bids; instruct and provide work direction to others; prepare and maintain accurate records and reports; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; use basic arithmetic to calculate square footage for concrete forms; prioritize work and meet established deadlines; and interpret and explain department policies and procedures as necessary.
Physical Demands (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands)
Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to perform assigned work in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat, cold or moisture; maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observation and communicating with others. Positions require frequent walking, bending, kneeling and the ability to push, lift, pull and carry up to 100 pounds. Requires driving.
Working Conditions (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following working conditions)
Work duties involve exposure to inclement weather and may be performed on scaffolding, in high places or confined spaces, above water or while hanging from a sling.
