We are seeking a dedicated Animal Control Officer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal welfare and possess the necessary skills to handle various situations effectively.

Thi s is a full time position with a schedule of Tuesday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

Under the supervision of the Director - Animal Shelter Operations, enforces the state laws and local ordinances dealing with animal control and issues citations for violations. Is responsible for responding to citizen complaints regarding domesticated animals, reports of cruelty or abuse, injured wildlife, animal disturbances, animal bites to humans and other animal related concerns. Investigates and documents incidents and performs follow-up as required in relation to animal control services and/or the Animal Shelter. Essential functions include but are not limited to:

1. Responds to and investigates complaints related to stray animals, vicious dogs, animal bites, dead or injured animals, livestock killings and other animal related complaints and takes action to resolve the matter. Works with owners and neighbors in the attempted resolution of animal related problems. Educates the public regarding animal care and the law.

2. Assists with investigations of suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect, includes reviewing the condition of the animals, interviewing violators and witnesses, and collecting, documenting and securing evidence. Determines whether to issue a citation. Issues appearance tickets on animal violations as necessary.

3. Assists in enforcing animal laws and picks up stray animals. Uses catchpoles, traps, mace, TASER, and tranquilizing gun to capture and impound animals. Captures and impounds dogs and cats that have bitten individuals to quarantine them as required.

4. Maintains a daily log of animal control incidents, dog quarantines, citations issued, and other enforcement activities.

5. Documents results of investigations by completing reports on animal bites, livestock killings and related activities. Documents information on animals that have been picked up.

6. With animal shelter staff, reviews the general health and condition of animals brought to shelter and may decide the immediate disposal of animals that are injured or vicious.

7. May perform euthanasia of animals.

8. Informs the public on the animal control laws and ordinances and related issues. Assists residents in the removal of stray animals from properties, buildings or residences.

9. Cleans and sanitizes animal control vehicles and conducts inspections of kennels within the County.

Full time employees are also offered an Employer match of up to 5% in our Defined Contribution Plan and greater than two times the employee contribution to our Retirement Health Savings Plan. The Employee contribution for the RHS Plan is $900 annually with an employer contribution of $2,050 annually.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school graduation or equivalent. The County, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.

Experience: Two years of progressively more responsible experience in animal control and/or law enforcement.

Other Requirements:

  • Required to complete 100 hours of training in order to be certified by the Department of Agriculture.
  • Required to become a Certified Euthanasia Technician, and certified to use a tranquilizing gun.
  • Required to possess a valid Michigan Driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the care and handling of friendly or aggressive animals and the Michigan criminal and civil court system as it relates to animal abuse, cruelty and neglect.
  • Working knowledge of animal behavior, humane capture of animals, animal control ordinances in the County, identifying animals that are victim to abuse, cruelty and neglect, interviewing witnesses and obtaining information performing euthanasia, and applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft suite applications and software utilized in animal control. Skill in assembling and analyzing data and preparing comprehensive reports.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of animal control equipment, including, but not limited to, tranquilizer guns, bite sticks, batons, pepper spray, nets, traps, photographic equipment and other equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies or service needs on a 24-hour basis and to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
  • Reviews incidents with the Veterinarian to determine the nature and level of assistance to provide animals and how to respond to situations.
  • Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with County employees, contractors to the County, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials and the public.
