Summary
Nutrition Supervisor performs supervisory work in assisting food service management in a hospital cafeteria or patient care area. Employees in this classification typically plan, assign and supervise work of a large group of food service workers engaged in a variety of food service activities in a large medical facility. Responsibilities include assisting the professional staff in auditing patient menus, and coordinating work with food production personnel and other departments. Some incumbents in the classification assist professional or administrative personnel in ordering dietary supplies. Supervision is received from professional personnel who inspect work in progress, assist with problems which may arise and review work for quality of service to patients.
Responsibilities
- Supervises nutrition employees in preparing, portioning and serving food on the tray line, in the cafeteria and at catered functions.
- Ensures that proper techniques are used and that established procedures and standards are maintained in all work areas.
- Ensures that food is served accurately, attractively, and timely.
- Inspects each work area for cleanliness.
- Assigns cleaning duties to appropriate employees.
- Observes employee use of time to assure that work is completed and that breaks are taken according to schedule.
- Reassigns work-loads when necessary.
- Uses appropriate food service equipment as necessary, following proper safety, operation and cleaning procedures.
- Follows department and hospital policies and procedures in handling cash, placing orders and processing invoices and financial documents.
- Always handles patient, employer and visitor complaints with diplomacy.
- Identifies suboptimal performance and plans or assists in the implementation of corrective action.
- Provides orientation and on-the-job training for new employees using departmental guidelines.
- Ensures staff participation in required education programs and appropriate orientation and training courses.
- Participates in in-service training, area meetings, and supervisory care meetings.
- Conducts appropriate meetings for area of supervision according to standards set for the area.
- Trains co-workers and orders supplies when required.
- Consistently maintains records and documentation of work performed and required paperwork.
- Prepares and presents reports and statistics in a complete, accurate and confidential manner.
- Maintains knowledge of current county, state and federal guidelines/requirements, as they apply to job duties.
- Informs supervisor periodically of progress of all activities.
- Identifies when target dates will not be met and takes corrective measures as necessary.
- Performs related duties as requested.
- Adjusts personal schedule to accommodate departmental scheduling needs.
- Reports to supervisor any suggestions for changes in policies or procedures that would improve efficiency.
- Assumes responsibilities of other members of the department as needed.
- Serves in an administrative capacity in the absence of the Nutrition Assistant Manager.

- Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience
Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience. Supervisory experience is required.
Education
High school diploma is required. Associate's degree in related field is preferred.
Credentials
Valid license or certification is required as needed, based on the job or specialty. Incumbents performing direct patient care must have American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
