Summary
Ultrasound Technologist performs highly skilled technical work in diagnostic ultrasound using complex equipment for specialized and/or technically difficult examinations.
Responsibilities
- Scans patients and maintains all safety precautions while administering treatments in a manner appropriate to the age-specific needs of the patient.
- Acquires pertinent clinical information from patient's chart and/or computer and maintains safety standards particular to the age-specific needs of the patient.
- Develops films when Medical Surgical Technologist is not available.
- Records complete procedure in computer (HIS System) and records it on the daily log along with the technician's initials.
- Brings patient in and out of examination room.
- Transports patients to different areas of the x-ray department, when needed.
- Performs portable exam.
- Performs or aids radiologist in O.R. cases.
- Gives preliminary impression to physicians after completion of an exam when report is not in computer.
- Explains to patient and/or nurse the correct prep for an exam and (N.P.O. hydrating for pelvic, etc.) ensures that it agrees with their life cycle and safety requirement.
- Assists radiologist in the performance of special procedures.
- Sets necessary equipment and supplies needed when a special procedure is to be done.
- Reports equipment malfunction to supervisor.
- Cleans examination room after each patient and adheres to infection Control Policies and Procedures, including Universal Precautions.
- Assists in training of ultrasound students, residents and fellows.
- Reviews CQI Quarterly Report in Section Meeting and contributes ideas for continuous quality improvement.
- Possesses and maintains understanding of the principles of growth and development as they pertain to patients in all age groups.
- Assesses data reflective of the patient's status, and interprets the information needed to identify the patient's requirement.
- Maintains CPR certification.
- Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
- Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
- Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
- Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience
- Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.
Education
- Graduation from an accredited program in Ultrasound Technology is required.
Skill
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
- Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.
Credentials
- ARDMS registered.
- Employees hired BEFORE 2/1/2017 must obtain the required ARDMS certification by 12/31/2017.
- Employees hired AFTER 2/1/2017 who have completed training must obtain their required certification within six months of hire.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
