What are the responsibilities and job description for the Front Desk Laboratory Specialist position at Jackson Hospital and Clinic?
The Outreach/Front Desk Laboratory Specialist is responsible for daily operations/procedures performed by Front Desk lab staff inclusive of daily problems/issues. Responsible for supervising the basic workflow duties of patient identification, registration, specimen receipt, accessioning, specimen processing and dispatch to main lab, proper test ordering and coding. Responsible for supervising, training and ensure competency of outreach and front desk staff. Responsible for providing annual competency records for each employee to Laboratory Director. Provide daily reports to the Laboratory Director of any issues that occur for review.
The Outreach and Front Desk Lab Specialist performs duties, monitors, and supervises front desk, sends out desk laboratory operations and staff. The supervisor is responsible for all aspects of the front desk, and referral lab operations. Such responsibilities shall include but are not limited to adequate training, competency and monitoring of staff, accurate identification of patients, proper specimen receipt and labeling, accurate and timely sample receipt, labeling, delivery and sample sendout.
The Outreach and Front Desk Lab Specialist ensures divisional, department and hospital policies, procedures, guidelines and other documents are up to date and meet regulatory requirements. Lab documents require review every two years.
Additional responsibilities are computer data entry as required; promptly completes all assigned tasks with accuracy and on schedule; collects, reports, and documents patient data related to front desk and referral lab operations. Communicates effectively with the patient's RN/MD of changes or information required.
The specialist will ensure compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures.
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, assists and provides leadership by providing training, feedback, constructive criticism and coaching when warranted. Responsible to provide adequate supervision of the direct reporting staff, coordinate, train and maintain current skills assessment of staff in basic workflow duties, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of sample processing, patient identification, specimen labeling, specimen transport, completion of required tasks, equipment maintenance, supplies, reconciliation with documentation.
Consistently monitors the daily output of each staff member and ensures at least minimal expectations regarding productivity and quality of specimens, to include data collection and reports. Participates in the annual review process by maintaining notes on individual's performance throughout the year, providing constructive, fair, effective, unbiased, and factual data.
Responsible for troubleshooting and resolution of problems; maintains inventory of supplies.
Must maintain a working relationship with patients, visitors, customers, and medical staff.
Must attend/participate in mandatory education programs as defined or directed by hospital and departmental policy.
Recognizes their role and participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team working towards Jackson Hospital's mission, vision, Standards of Performance, and goal of meeting all customers' expectations.
Requirements:
A. Education: Bachelor's degree in a biological or physical science or MLT, MLS, preferred.
B. Experience: Previous specimen receipt and processing experience Previous experience supervising staff. Preferred but not required; knowledge of laboratory functions, medical terminology, and 1-2 years' medical field experience.
C. Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations: Preferred but not required; ASCP, HHS (HEW), AMT
D. Equipment/Tools/Work Aids: Basic computer knowledge, telephone operations, copier, fax, printer
E. Specialized Skills: Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English: additional languages preferred. Strong written and verbal skills required. Basic mathematical skills required to complete reports and forms.
F. Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary to handle specimens, operating computer and other office equipment. Considerable time standing or walking involved. Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
as workflow dictates; verbal communication and hearing ability to communicate with a variety of customers.
