The Surgical Technologist – First Assistant (ST-FA) functions under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon when functioning in the first assistant role and under a Registered Nurse (RN) when functioning as an Operating Technician (ORT). The ST-FA performs assistive and delegated functions depending on their role at the time. In the ST-FA role they may help position the patient, provide visualization during the surgical the procedure, assist in hemostais, assist with wound closure and perform skin closure, inject post operative local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon, secure wound drains, apply wound dressing, and participate in the transfer and transport of the patient to the post operative destination. In the Operating Room Technician role, the ORT may assist in planning, preparing and setting up for cases, obtain and manage supplies and equipment. The work that is performed is done under established policies and procedures of the institution and according to the experience and scope of educational requirements of the individual and applicable legal guidelines. The SA-FA and ORT will be expected to anticipate the needs of the patient and physician and make decisions within the scope of their practice.
Requirements:
Completion of an Operating Room Technician Program in a technical or junior college or completion of an acceptable hospital program unless trained through previous experience. Successful completion of an accredited surgical assistant program. Certification as a Surgical First Assistant or equivalent. BLS required.
