Job Summary:
The Assistant Director assumes the duties of the Department Director in their absence. Responsible for maintaining performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Is responsible for scheduling staff in department, maintains stock/supplies levels, ordering equipment, etc. as needed. Performs as an MT/MLS Generalist (Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Urinalysis, and Immunohematology) to efficiently produce quality results in a timely manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include analytical equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation thereof. Other pre-analytic duties include supply stocking, specimen quality assessment, specimen processing, quality control and calibration performance, and other pre-analytical activities as assigned.
- Performs all analytical procedures efficiently and accurately, according to established Jackson Laboratory policies and procedures. Participates in proficiency testing, consistently maintaining acceptable scores of 80% or higher.
- Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, reporting results (including abnormal and critical results) in accordance with established procedures. Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, neonatal through geriatric patients.
- Exercises professional judgment in evaluation, specimen integrity, result accuracy and inter-result validity and takes corrective action as necessary. Such corrective action shall include specimen rejection, recollection, and/or retesting using the same or alternate methods and/or utilizes other skills associated with the practice of clinical laboratory science to ensure validity and accuracy of testing at all times taking care not to compromise patient care with excessive rejections, recollections or delays. If in their judgment a specimen is compromised, the technologist shall include an appropriate disclaimer statement in the report indicating the potential compromised nature of the result and why.
- Works with the Director on planning, organizing and directing department operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
- Makes daily rounds in the department(s) to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and
supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.
- Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems.
- Creates and maintains staff schedules, shifts staff to accommodate work load or as needs arise.
- Assists with preparing department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff and administration.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family, visitors, co-workers and other staff.
- Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities, while promoting effective intradepartmental relationships.
- Participates in the human resource management function for the department by assisting in the selection, promotion, orientation and performance appraisal processes.
- Assists with the department’s in-service training.
- Assists in planning programs and safety and preparedness for fire and disaster.
- Attends and participates on hospital committees, as appropriate.
- Assists with the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Laboratory performance improvement (PI) and CQI activities.
- Responsible for the coordination of staff and student education with an emphasis on the organizational performance quality improvement program.
Professional Requirements:

- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and JCAHO regulations related to the
Laboratory Department and, as appropriate, to the facility.
- Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized time clock correctly.

- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate.
- Assists in resolving personnel concerns at the departmental level.
- Employee adheres to and practices the standards of performance outlines in the Standards of Performance handbook
- Assists in maintaining compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection Control and department protocols and competencies.
- Employee performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s/department/s Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, or, upward through the chain of command, the Compliance Office or hospital hotline.
- Assists in maintaining standards of professional society procedures and ethical behavior.
- Assists in maintaining hospital requirements, policies and standards on confidentiality.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the
department.
Education/Regulatory Requirements:
- Bachelor Degree obtained from an accredited program in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) (or CLIA equivalent) required
- Master’s degree in Laboratory Technology, Business Administration or Healthcare Management preferred
- Supervisor Licensed in the State of Florida in all six clinical areas (Microbiology, Serology/Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology and Immunohematology)
- MT/MLS Certified (Generalist) by ASCP, AMT or AAB
- At least (5) years previous experience working as a Generalist MT/MLS
- At least (1) year previous experience in Laboratory Management
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Strong written and verbal skills.
Skills:
- Basic computer knowledge.
