Under the direction of the Director, the Patient Care Manager (PCM) is responsible on a 24-hour basis for the planning and comprehensive operations of a specific clinical unit or group of units ensuring compliance with hospital and nursing mission, goals, philosophy, policies and procedures. The Patient Care Manager utilizes the nursing process in the delivery of patient care and ensures quality care is provided through appropriate allocation of human resources, maintaining financial control of the unit, and serving as a liaison between administration and staff. The individual demonstrates personal and professional responsibility; participates in creating an atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance, recognition and respect; and assumes responsibility for own professional development. This position serves as liaison to physicians, administration and hospital staff. The unit manager demonstrates personal and professional responsibility, participates in a caring atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance, and recognition and assumes responsibility for own professional development.
The Patient Care Manager (PCM) plans for, organizes, directs, and controls human and material resources for providing nursing care to a group of patients on a specified nursing unit(s).
The PCM will ensure that the nursing process is the basis for the practice of nursing and the provision of patient care on assigned unit(s). Ensuring a comprehensive, continuous and systematic patient assessment is completed and documented on all patients within the time frame established by policy and that assessment information is obtained from the patient, family, and members of the health care team.
Ensures that the staff RN has developed and documented a current plan of care for each patient in an individualized, accurate and timely manner; supports an interdisciplinary plan of care, ensure medical plan is implemented and carried through and validates rounding is performed by RN, LPN and NST.
Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates material, technological and financial resources of a capital and non-salary expense nature necessary to provide patient care and to realize the plan for nursing.
Demonstrates responsibility for own competency/mandatories.
Communicates and assists with staff meetings to include pertinent nursing and hospital information. Allows staff an avenue to participate in unit level decision related to patient care and nursing practice.
Participates in development and coordination of basic and continuing education of students, peers, members of the nursing team, and other members of the health care team.
Responds to all customer requests in an appropriate and timely manner.
Adheres to and consistently supports professional standards and health care regulations that provide for and promote safety, quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
Requirements
Education: Basic nursing education required for RN licensure, BSN preferred
Experience: 3 years of clinical experience including 1 year of nursing management / leadership experience, preferred.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations: Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Alabama. BCLS required. ACLS preferred.
Specialized Skills: Basic computer skills, good communication, time management, and critical thinking skills. Understands the nursing process and how to build and support a team. Has a working knowledge of budget issues and fiscal management. Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Able to analyze situations, recognize problems, search out pertinent facts and reach sound conclusions. Time management and critical thinking skills. Ability to form effective working relationships with employees, management, physicians and patients.
