Category: Radiology City: Jackson State: Tennessee Shift: 8 - Evening (United States of America) Job Description Summary: Under the supervision of a Certified Medical Physicist, the Medical Physics Assistant (MPA) performs various tasks in the Radiation Oncology Department and is proficient in the use of radiation detection devices and is responsible for the quality assurance (QA) of radiation equipment, radiation detection devices, as well as helps manage the data involved in the various aspects of the job. The MPA provides assistance in validating new radiotherapy technology and plays a very active role in the departmental quality control (QC) program. The MPA will also assist with any daily tasks within the Physics/Dosimetry Dept. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Perform and document QA activities including but not limited to, measurements involving radiation devices and equipment that includes linear accelerators. Communicate the results in a timely manner to minimize any delays in care and prevent any miscommunications. Maintain and properly use dosimetry equipment such as ionization chambers, electrometers, water phantom scanning systems, daily check devices, ion chamber arrays, as well as use all computers and related software systems . Also required to use thermometers, barometers, small tools, etc. Assists the certified physicists with all acceptance testing and calibration of new equipment. Maintains an orderly physics lab for the storage of all physics equipment. Participates within scope of the job to assess and improve equipment and process that relate to quality assurance. Participates in the training of new staff as necessary. Assists the physicists and Radiation Safety Officer of the system with functions related to radiation safety when necessary including radiation surveys. Assist physicists during staff shortages. Communicates with all areas of the Radiation Oncology Dept. as needed especially but not limited to, radiation therapists, physicists and dosimetrists. Offer suggestions for improvements in the Rad Oncology Dept. that may be related to costs, efficiency, patient comfort, better processes that could affect patient care with the radiation oncology dept. Participates in departmental educational meetings that pertain to any hardware QA/QC. Must be able to successfully use the Rad Oncology Dept. electronic medical record as necessary to perform any and all job duties. Keeps up with Rad Oncology equipment inventory, calibration dates and other related information. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed. EDUCATION: Minimum of Associates of Science Degree in a related field such as Radiologic Technology, physics or chemistry. Bachelor of Science preferred in a scientific field. Masters in Chemistry or Physics welcomed. LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION: N/A EXPERIENCE: Related experience is desirable but will extensively train a qualified candidate.
