Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Activity Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading teen DJ’ing and dance instruction, focusing on mixing, scratching, beat-matching, and choreography. This role involves planning and organizing sessions, fostering creative expression, and preparing participants for performances. The ideal candidate has experience working with youth, creating an inclusive environment, and inspiring confidence through music and movement. You must be able to work the following schedule: Wednesday 6pm-10pm, Thursday 6pm-10pm, Friday 6pm-10pm, Sunday 3pm-11pm.
Responsibilities
- Teach DJ’ing and / or dance techniques to teens, focusing on mixing, scratching, beat-matching, choreography, and performance skills.
- Develop progressive, skill-building lessons in DJ’ing and / or dance, guiding teens from beginner to advanced levels.
- Lead engaging, high-energy sessions that introduce teens to music mixing, freestyle, and structured dance routines.
- Organize and supervise daily recreational activities, incorporating music, movement, and other creative programs, leading up to showcases or events that highlight teen achievements.
- Encourage active participation by fostering teen involvement in DJ’ing, dance, leadership, and recreational activities.
- Recruit at least 3 new teens weekly for classes and ensure consistent attendance (minimum 4 days per week).
- Help teens develop their artistic voice and confidence, guiding them in creating unique DJ sets, remixes, and dance performances.
- Ensure a safe and welcoming environment by maintaining clear supervision, promoting positive engagement, and upholding health and safety protocols.
- Keep accurate records, including attendance, incident reports, and participation logs.
- Capture and upload daily photos/videos of participants engaging in activities to the agency's intranet as part of program documentation.
Outreach & Recruitment
- Conduct outreach to recruit teens, focusing on disconnected or at-risk youth through community outreach, partnerships with local schools, churches, and community organizations.
- Build relationships with community stakeholders to ensure a diverse and inclusive participant base.
- Represent the program in the community to raise awareness and recruit new participants for a variety of center activities.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work as part of a collaborative team, supporting other Specialists and Group Leaders in implementing a variety of activities across different programs.
- Maintain effective communication with the Program Director, participants, and families, ensuring guidance and updates are shared professionally.
- Participate in regular meetings to discuss program updates, needs, and changes with the Program and Division Directors.
Compliance & Reporting
- Adhere to all safety and compliance standards as outlined by the Department of Health and New York State OCFS policies.
- Submit regular reports on program outcomes, participant attendance, incidents, and overall engagement to the Program Director.
- Stay informed on the goals and philosophy of the Riis Academy program and effectively communicate them to teens and parents.
Additional Responsibilities
- Prepare the learning environment by creating a welcoming space that exhibits student work across music, art, and other programs.
- Organize and maintain storage areas for materials and equipment to ensure proper use and minimize waste.
- Supervise field trips, ensuring that participants are safe and well-supervised.
- Assist with other tasks as assigned by the Program Director to ensure the success of the teen center and its programs.
Statement of Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong knowledge of music production, including beat-making, sound design, and studio management.
- Ability to effectively teach music production and art techniques, including drawing, painting, and art history, in an engaging and accessible manner.
- Excellent organizational and classroom management skills, with the ability to maintain a safe and productive learning environment.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of teens, adapting lessons to meet varying needs, interests, and developmental levels.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for building relationships with teens, families, community partners, and staff.
- Creativity, enthusiasm, and a passion for youth development, particularly in the areas of music and the arts.
