The Jacobi Carbons Laboratory Technician is an entry-level position primarily responsible for supporting Jacobi lab functions including quality assurance testing of activated carbon products, collecting and reporting test data, processing and shipping activated carbon samples, calibration and routine maintenance of JCI’s laboratory equipment, management of retain samples and lab supplies, and support of sales and technical services. The candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced lab environment, be familiar with general lab safety and chemical handling/storage, must be able to be able lift up to 50 lbs at times, be willing to work in hot and/or dusty environments at times, and be able to work while wearing PPE (N95 dust mask, respirator, etc).
Essential responsibilities:
Quality Assurance Responsibilities
- Executes Quality Assurance testing for activated carbon in support of Jacobi Production.
- Physical properties (particle size distribution, density, moisture, ash, dust, etc.);
- Wet chemistry testing (pH, titrations, adsorption isotherms, etc.);
- Elemental analysis using acid digestion and Flame AAS;
- Gas phase adsorption testing and respirator cartridge testing.
- Test methods utilized include ASTM, AWWA, NIOSH and non-standard test methods.
- Preparing and shipping carbon samples to 3rd party labs
- Accurately record and report test data using MS Office and NetSuite.
- Adheres to procedures established by Jacobi’s corporate quality management system and JCI’s ISO 9001 certification.
Technical Services and Sales Support Responsibilities
- Creating and shipping samples for customer requests: crushing, screening, blending and packaging carbons to meet sales specifications.
- Evaluating customer samples stemming from customer complaints and/or field failures, or other product evaluation purposes.
- Prepare written reports on results of studies or other projects. Utilize statistical tools and other analysis to determine and report product quality, process control, and specifications.
General Laboratory Management:
- Assist with maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, and generate and maintain proper calibration records.
- Assist in execution of CAPEX projects for purchases of updated equipment and/or supplies.
- Follow Jacobi ISO procedures, good laboratory practices, chemicals safety precautions, and PPE requirements as specified by company policies.
Previous Work & Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering is desired. Related physical science degrees with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience will be considered.
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation such as UV/VIS, IR, AAS, TOC, TGA, mass flow controllers, hygrometers, etc.
- Proficiency with Windows and MS Office is required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
