POSITION PURPOSE

The North County Food Bank Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all warehouse and food center operations at the North County facility, ensuring efficient workflows, maintaining a safe and organized environment, and serving as the on-site expert for warehouse activities. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Operations, this position supervises two warehouse assistants and a Food Center Coordinator while ensuring smooth coordination with key departments, including Logistics, Inventory & Receiving, Volunteer Management, and Programs. The Supervisor oversees warehouse activities such as inventory control, receiving, put-away, agency shopping, and inventory for the client choice pantry, ensuring alignment with best practices established by the San Diego Food Bank (SDFB). Additionally, this role bridges operational needs between the North County and Miramar facilities, facilitating seamless operations and alignment with organizational goals.
 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Warehouse Management
  • Oversee the daily operations of the warehouse, ensuring efficient receiving, storage, and order-picking processes to meet operational deadlines and program requirements.
  • Maintain accurate inventory management for inventory of programs stored in North County (e.g., Food for Kids, On the Go, Diapers, Period Supplies), as well as government programs (EFAP, CSFP) and general food inventory, ensuring availability and timely distribution.
  • Monitor performance, tracking team metrics, KPI’s (e.g., response times, satisfaction scores, resolution rates) to ensure service standards are met.
  • Ensure the warehouse remains clean, organized, and compliant with safety and operational standards, fostering an environment that meets the organization's goals and audit requirements.
  • Continuously assess and recommend measures to improve safety, operational effectiveness, internal and external customer service, and efficiency, contributing to the overall success of the warehouse.
Coordination and Communication
  • Partner with the Logistics Manager to schedule drivers, coordinate deliveries, and address crossover warehouse support needs to maintain seamless operations across locations.
  • Work closely with the Inventory & Receiving Manager to ensure alignment in inventory practices, accurate data sharing, and inventory consistency between the North County and Miramar warehouses.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Manager to plan and align volunteer activities with the operational needs of the warehouse, ensuring proper utilization of volunteer resources.
  • Communicate with Programs staff to understand inventory needs, agency requirements, and other operational considerations that affect program delivery.
Supervision and Leadership
  • Provide leadership and direction to Warehouse Coordinators and the Food Center Coordinator, setting clear expectations and operational goals.
  • Offer ongoing training, coaching, support, and professional development opportunities for direct reports, conducting regular performance evaluations to encourage growth and accountability.
  • Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, customer service, and continuous improvement, ensuring high levels of staff engagement and operational efficiency.
  • Motivate and support the team, celebrating team and individual achievements and be available to answer questions, address concerns, and help team members handle difficult situations.
  • Support conflict resolution, acting as a point of escalation for challenging customer situations and helping resolve disputes or complaints.

Inventory Control
  • Conduct regular and accurate inventory counts, documenting and reconciling discrepancies promptly.
  • Ensure inventory control processes comply with audit standards and organizational requirements, maintaining up-to-date records for tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Manage inventory for North County-specific programs, ensuring timely replenishment and efficient allocation of resources for program success.
Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, as well as OSHA, USDA, and other applicable regulations by coordinating with the Director of Facilities and Safety to develop, implement, and monitor safety protocols, including regular safety inspections, incident reporting, and corrective actions.
  • Work with the Director of Facilities and Safety to provide safety training for warehouse staff and volunteers and maintain readiness for audits through accurate tracking of compliance metrics.
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Facilities and Safety to address safety concerns, share updates on compliance measures, and ensure alignment with organizational safety standards and culture of safety first.
Other Responsibilities
  • Oversee the receipt of deliveries from the San Diego Food Bank and third-party vendors, managing staging for distributions to ensure operational readiness.
  • Support agency interactions within the Food Center, providing assistance and ensuring a positive and efficient experience for partner agencies.
  • Encourage and model behavior that fosters trust and satisfaction in customer interactions, gathering internal and external customer feedback to identify recurring issues and areas for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate metrics, records, and paperwork, ensuring timely reporting and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, business, or a related field a plus.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in warehouse operations, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
  • Proven experience overseeing warehouse staff and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational standards.
  • Familiarity with inventory management systems and warehouse processes.
  • Experience working in a food bank, nonprofit, or similar organization is a strong advantage.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES


Knowledge of:
  • Warehouse operations and inventory control best practices.
  • Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
  • Customer service principles and problem-solving strategies.
  • Working in fast paced environments with evolving priorities.
  • Knowledge of warehouse safety protocols, OSHA standards, and equipment operation (e.g., forklifts).

Ability to:
  • Plan and manage warehouse operations efficiently.
  • Accurately and efficiently carry out inventory control practices and procedures.
  • Operate warehouse equipment, including a forklift.
  • Communicate effectively across multiple teams.
  • Analyze and resolve operational challenges.
  • Develop and implement appropriate goals and team objectives.
  • Work independently, organize, and manage multiple priorities, working independently as needed.
  • Understand, interpret and explain SDFB policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop direct reports.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid CA driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification.

COMPENSATION
  • This is a full-time, non-exempt/hourly/benefited position.
  • A market-level competitive salary is between $28.00 - $ 32.00 per hour based on experience.
  • The compensation package includes a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package including: 403(b) plan with 200% employer matching; excellent health care coverage with free employee medical, dental and vision plans; company paid term life insurance; and a generous accrual of paid vacation and sick leave.

WORK SCHEDULE 
  • Monday to Friday from 6:00am – 3:00pm on site in the NC warehouse.
  • This position occasionally requires overtime or weekend shifts.
