What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Monitor position at JACOBSEN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY INC?
Monitor and respond to changes in conditions within buildings under construction in order to prevent construction-related emergencies and protect buildings/construction sites under Jacobsen’s care from damage due to fire, water, wind, etc. Patrol assigned work site off hours and inspect for hazards or conditions that may cause property damage, with a heightened focus on fire prevention.
Your Day to Day
- Perform off hours monitoring of all levels of a project site, including the attic area and roof.
- Review all hot work and wet work permits from the prior shift and inspect those specific areas for signs of fire or water damage.
- Maintain an hourly log of areas and items inspected, as well as any notes or observations, including out-of-tolerance equipment.
- Inspect specific items that pose a greater than normal risk for fires or water damage, including but not limited to:
- Electrical panels, spider boxes, SO cords, and egress lighting
- Window conditioning/mechanical units and humidity controls
- Water lines
- Temporary roofing
- Monitor the temporary Fire Alarm Control Panel (“FACP”).
- In collaboration with the onsite security personnel, close all doors and other openings (e.g., roof hatch).
- Communicate emergencies to Security teams and Jacobsen Management.
- Participate in a daily “Pass Off” with the upcoming (or outgoing) shift to receive (and relay) up-to-date
- information pertinent to the upcoming (or outgoing) shift.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Understanding the importance of the function, the last line of security for a historic and/or sensitive
- structure, and acting accordingly.
- Demonstrating awareness of surroundings and ability to recognize when something is out of place (such as graffiti).
- Being results-oriented with excellent problem identification and problem-solving skills.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience as safety supervisor, fire fighter, police officer, or facility manager is preferred.
- Experience providing off hours, security, and/or monitoring services to corporations, events or organizations is preferred.
