Job Summary
$50,732 / year or higher DOQ Full-Time County Benefits (Part-Time County Benefits)
Performs responsible work providing effective supervision for assigned defendants/probationers who are referred to Colonial Community Corrections (CCC) by a judicial officer. There are two levels of Pretrial/Probation Officer distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.
Responsibilities
- [Pretrial] Supervises defendants placed on pretrial supervision by the Courts or Magistrates in accordance with the conditions and terms of their bail and in accordance with agency policy; conducts investigations of potential pretrial defendants by gathering background information regarding criminal history and other social history information; assesses risk/needs of Defendant; notifies supervised Defendants of court dates and assists them in attending court when necessary; informs the court promptly of compliance or noncompliance that may warrant modification of release conditions and of any arrest of a supervised client pending trial; recommends modification of release conditions to the Commonwealth Attorney and the referring Court.
- Prepares progress reports for the Courts and provide testimony for the Agency Director and staff, the Department of Criminal Justice and the court system, as necessary.
- Documents supervision contacts; ensures objectives/conditions are conveyed to and understood by Defendant; monitors and documents progress of Defendant toward set
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
- Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System; and, some knowledge of interviewing and assessing client behavior.
- Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to display a professional demeanor that is conducive to motivating offender change; ability to adapt, modify and change in accordance with best practices as
relationships with court personnel, such as judges, lawyers, commonwealth attorneys, sheriffs, police and other criminal justice employees.
- Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, handle multiple assignments, changing priorities, and ensure timeliness and quality of completed assignments.
- Ability to communicate, both orally and in written form, clear and concise program objectives and goals and summarize achievements of programs in reports and other documents as requested.
Position Level Requirements
Probation/Pretrial Officer I • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, human services
or related field.
- Some experience in adult probation, criminal justice or related field.
Probation/Pretrial Officer II • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, human services or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in adult probation, criminal justice or related field.
- Qualified, Certified or Approved trainer in one of the following areas, who is teaching or facilitating said course at
o Success Plans
o MOST/OST risk assessment
o Motivational Interviewing
o PRAXIS/VPRAI
o Cognitive Behavioral program such as T4C or MRT
o Or, others as approved by the Agency Director
Required for all career ladder levels II or higher: Satisfactory completion of introductory (initial or promotional) period; “meets” or higher on last performance evaluation;
not received a written reprimand or higher-level disciplinary action within the past 12 months; funding of career ladders in budget must have been approved by Board of
Supervisors; and certification from Department Director of completion of requirements.
