Job Summary:
As a Harbor Pilot, you will be in command of the operation of a vessel and will be responsible for supervising the work of all crew members. You will determine the course and speed of the vessel maneuver it to avoid hazards, and continuously monitor the vessel’s position with charts and navigational aids.
What you’ll do:
- Command the tugboat to tow barges into and out of harbors, rivers, lakes, and bays; signals workers on deck to rig towlines to barges to be towed; determine the proper course and towing speed on basis of specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and current; steers the tugboat to push or pull barges to destination utilizing navigation devices such as radar, sonic depth finder, compass and aids other aids to navigation, such as buoys.
- Pay careful attention at all times and respond to emergency situations according to TVT’s policy and procedure manual. Must have the ability to keep up with paperwork requirements for effective communication and navigational purposes. Must have the ability to read and understand the United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations and possess basic math skills.
- Build and check tow by utilizing various tools/equipment to include but not limited to wrenches, ratchets, shackles, chain straps and wires/cables.
- Move and stack sets of rigging throughout the vessel and barges.
- Move pumps and hoses about the barges and place hoses in wing tank/void for removal of water.
- Assist with the stocking and delivery of various supplies from on the vessel to and from the front hole.
- Complete skiff operations to allow the crew to go ashore and come aboard the vessel.
- Put out sounders at the head of the barge (river division).
- Complete processes to allow the vessel to take on fuel (inland division).
- Complete daily and periodic cleaning tasks to include but not limited to trash removal, mopping, scraping, sanding and painting.
What you’ll need:
- TWIC card and MMC credential (required).
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience operating a towboat on the river is required.
- Must have updated and accurate license issued by the USCG for navigation.
