The Process Engineer will be focused on leading the design of the right manufacturing pilot processes and equipment for a coatings research capability, linked to future needs at the Fontana, CA site. This includes the process design, equipment specifications, integration requirements & commissioning to enable new development work on both coating materials and process. Position will be reporting to the Senior Manager. You will with cross functional internal and external teams to evolve James Hardie’s capabilities in Coatings Technology and Application Processes to drive increased product value and operational efficiencies.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay scale for this position is $105,000 to $130,000. Placement in the range depends on several factors such as experience, skills, geography and internal equity and may change over time. This position qualifies for benefits and you will be eligible to participate in a bonus plan.

What You’ll Do:
Leads the development of the right coatings process and equipment to deliver a pilot line to enable future product value and operational benefits to the business. (75%)
- Coordinating efforts and fostering collaboration within cross-functional project teams consisting of R&D scientists, plant engineers, design and construction engineers, quality, EH&S, vendors, plant floor operators and maintenance technicians.
- Able to navigate through balanced decision analysis, understanding trade offs
- Incorporating project management duties such as project scope writing, resource management, timelines, reporting progress to business and delivering executed projects.
- Reviewing design and construction documents to ensure accuracy and correct issues prior to installation.
- Providing technical support and expertise during design, install, start-up, and preliminary production runs of new processes.
- Providing technical leadership during commissioning, observe, troubleshoot, and document any process or scale-up issues and work with partners to resolve.
- Providing operating guidelines and procedures for new processes.
- Trial design – develop the best approach to achieving the desired trial outcomes.
- Providing technical training and expertise to team members on relevant to new process and process implementation.
- Working with plant line employees to discuss concepts of new technologies, safety requirements, and process requirements.
- Developing detailed trial plans and coordinating and overseeing in-plant trials.
- Personally, interacting with plant personnel who are critical in helping develop requirements of new processes and who understand existing processes;
- Effectively communicating with plant personnel to promote new concepts and drive process implementation;
- Personally interacting with identified R&D personnel to gain understanding of new technologies and impact on existing processes; and
- Effectively communicating with R&D personnel to provide guidance on existing processes and process constraints.
Essential
- Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Materials Engineering
- 8 or more years hands-on experience in manufacturing/industrial processes
- Development of process flow maps from Raw Materials to Finished goods
- Ability to observe and understand existing and new processes, including troubleshooting issues
- Experience in equipment/component design and hands-on experience with equipment installation & troubleshooting on continuous production lines
- Familiarity in process automation, continuous production lines, and commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in a manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with best-practices principles such as Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, Lean Manufacturing, Failure Modes analysis
- Experience in a manufacturing environment with operational and safety procedures, and development of functional requirements and detail specifications for equipment specifications
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional groups and external partners and vendors
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong track-record of developing and implementing innovative solutions to complex problems in a timely manner
- Demonstrated use of project management skills
- Ability to utilize industry-standard CAD packages for drafting of concepts and design review
- Experience in leading or managing projects
- Knowledge of coating application processes and related equipment
- Knowledge of control systems specification and PLC programming
