Definition/Summary
Under general supervision, employees in the Heavy Equipment Operator position perform the full range of operating heavy and light equipment including backhoe, excavator, mower tractor, road grader and various other equipment along with maintenance, installation, and repair assignments on the District’s conveyance and delivery facilities with minimal supervision and training. This is a non-exempt and safety sensitive position.
Essential Functions
- Operates heavy & light equipment including but not limited to backhoes, tractors,
excavators, mowers, and land grading machinery.
- Performs construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of pipeline facilities.
- Performs construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation turnouts.
- Performs construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of canals, ditches, water control structures, and gates.
- Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of valves, grates, and head gates.
- Performs construction, maintenance, and repair activities at other District facilities including the shop and yard.
- Cleans weeds and bushes and trims trees around weirs, canals, ditches, structures, and turnouts.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, outside agencies, and the public.
- Regular attendance and adherence to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
Other Duties
- Collects water quality samples for laboratory testing.
- Shuts down main-lines in emergencies.
- Distributes customer notices.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

- Heavy and light machine operation along with light truck experience.
- Methods, materials, and equipment used in irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair work.

- Perform basic work assignments in the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems.

Typical Physical Activities
- Operates District vehicles and heavy equipment in field installations and maintenance work.
- Must be able to carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, and climbs during field maintenance and repair work.
- Works in an environment with exposure to dust, dirt, and significant temperature changes between cold and heat.
- Communicates orally with District staff in face-to-face, one-to-one settings.
- Regularly uses cellular phone for communication.
- Uses office equipment such as computer terminals, copiers, and FAX machines.
- Stands and walks for extended time periods.
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges with or without correction.
Environmental Factors
1. Exposure to the sun: 50% to 100% work time spent outside a building and exposed to the sun.
2. Work above floor level: Some work done on ladders or other surfaces from 4 to 12 feet above the ground.
3. High temp: Considerable work time in hard manual labor in temperatures between 80-90 degrees.
4. Humidity: Work in areas with unusually high humidity.
5. Wetness: More than 10% of the work time getting part or all of the body and/or clothing wet.
6. Noise: Occasionally there are unusually loud sounds.
7. Slippery surfaces: Occasional work on unusually slippery surfaces.
8. Oil: Some parts of the body in contact with oil or grease occasionally.
9. Dust: Works in or around areas with minor amounts of dust.
10. Irregular or extended work hours: Occasionally required to change working hours or work overtime.
Desirable Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two years of responsible work experience in the heavy equipment operation field as well as/or installation, maintenance, and repair of water service systems and meters, including some experience with field customer relations work.
License Certificate Registration Requirement
Possession of a valid California Class C. Class A Driver License is a plus and may be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain such required license(s) may be cause for disciplinary action. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
Possession and proof of a driving record free of multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for two (2) consecutive years. The driving record will not contribute to an increase in the District's automobile rates.
Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening is also required.

Pay: $18.50 - $20.00 per hour
