James River Surveying is seeking a qualified and motivated Survey Crew Chief to join our team in Richmond, VA. We work generally within a 1-hour radius of the greater Richmond area and do not require overnight travel. We offer flexible work hours to qualified candidates.
In this role, you will perform fieldwork for multiple types of surveys, including boundary, topographic, mortgage, GPS, ALTA, and construction staking. You will report directly to the Senior Manager of Land Surveys.
Job Responsibilities
You will work within a small team that closely coordinates and distributes survey work for the week. Once work is assigned, you will work primarily as a 1 person crew to:
- Read plats and legal descriptions to setup property being surveyed
- Locate and/or set (when necessary) property corners
- Operate a Trimble Robotic total station to collect all location data in data collector
- Take clear, detailed field notes and sketches
- Recognize potential issues in the field and report them to the office
- Review field collected survey data to ensure project requirements are met, submit to office at end of each day
Other tasks include:
- Working as a 2 person crew on larger projects (5% - 10% of the time)
- Communicating with the clients in the field on behalf of the company
- Maintaining and protecting all surveying equipment to ensure its readiness for daily use
- Maintaining vehicle to good working condition and professional appearance
- Training and mentoring other survey crew personnel in the use of all equipment and procedures (when needed)
- Adhering to all company policies and procedures
- Performing other duties or special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications:

- High School Diploma and 3 years' experience in land surveying with 2 or more years in a Party Chief role
- Experience running total station and data collector
- Able to follow detailed instructions and pay close attention to detail
- Willing to learn new concepts and adapt to new technologies
- Proficient communication skills including verbal and written, interpersonal and organizational
- Ability to interact professionally with other staff
- Ability to collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation

Abilities:
- Lifts at least 60 pounds for extended periods of time
- Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis
- Work outdoors in the heat as well as the cold
