Purpose:
Consistent with the Jamestown School Department’s vision and mission, the school bus monitor assists
in providing safe transportation, so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from
the district’s curriculum and extracurricular programs.
Qualifications:
1. Demonstrate a positive character and ability to effectively interact and communicate with
others.
2. Ability to be complete all physical and cognitive duties of the job.
3. Ability to manage student behaviors to keep students safe on a standing and moving bus.
Roles & Responsibilities of the Bus Monitor:
1. Assist the bus driver in maintaining good student conduct on the bus.
2. Take role of students on bus and head count for each bus run morning and afternoon.
3. Assist young or disabled students in getting on and off the bus.
4. Secure seat belts, wheelchairs, necessary supports, etc.
5. Seek emergency medical help when needed.
6. Provide written records of violations of the student code to the Building Principal.
7. Collect personal items left on the bus and turn them over to the school secretary.
8. Complete all necessary paperwork as directed by Director of Transportation or designee.
9. Use proper dress attire at all times (no tank tops, shorts, sandals, or flipflops)
(for safety
purposes). You must wear secure, rubber shoes.
10. Participate in evacuation drills, to be conducted twice during the school year.
11. Must do pretrip and posttrip interior bus inspection.
12. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents,
school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
13. Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate
attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.
14. Participate in appropriate inservice and workshop programs and attend any required meetings.
15. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional
duties, and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines.
16. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as
assigned by the Director of Student Services and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
