Position Summary
The Finance Director (FD) ensures the financial health and operational efficiency of the Jansen Art Center. Overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance, this position serves as a vital resource across the organization. The role involves responding to inquiries and solving daily problems while supporting leadership, staff, studio leaders, and customers. Success requires striking a balance between strategic financial planning and hands-on management of accounting and daily operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management
· Oversee all financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting
· Use QuickBooks Online (QBO) for accounting and Gusto for payroll and HR compliance
· File and pay quarterly sales taxes and reports with the Department of Revenue
· Ensure compliance with accounting principles, nonprofit accounting best practices and internal controls
· Manage cash flow, credit card processing, and bank accounts
· Reconcile daily shop sales, process deposits, and handle credit card transactions
· Make daily bank deposits as needed
· Process monthly artists' consignment sales payments and semi-monthly instructor fee payments
· Conduct spot audits of shop cash and maintain strong vendor relations
Payroll & Compliance
· Process semi-monthly payroll through Gusto, confirm employee timesheets, and ensure timely tax filings.
· Work with the ED on hiring processes, manage background checks, and onboard new employees via Gusto
Budgeting & Financial Strategy
· Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with the ED and Finance Committee, including developing a timeline for delivery to the Finance Committee in October
· Monitor financial performance and provide forecasts and recommendations
· Communicate directly with the ED regarding any concerns about cash flow, budget variances, financial risks, or compliance issues
· Assist in preparing financial documents for grants, audits, and external funders
Operational & Risk Management
· Manage all licensing, insurance, and nonprofit regulatory compliance
· Maintain organizational records and contracts.
· Work with the ED to manage risk assessment and mitigation strategies
Board & Leadership Support
· Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the ED and Finance Committee
· Help coordinate and prepare for finance committee meetings, assist with scheduling, preparing and sending financial reports approved by the ED
· Attend Finance Committee and Board meetings as needed
· Provide financial guidance to leadership, ensuring informed decision-making
· Support strategic planning with financial insights and analysis
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education & Technical Skills:
· Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field; CPA or nonprofit financial certification preferred
· Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting and internal controls
· Proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Gusto, and Microsoft Office Suite with advanced Excel skills
· Knowledge of CRM systems is a plus
· Spanish language proficiency is a plus
Experience:
· 5 years of nonprofit financial management experience
· Experience managing budgets and financial reporting
· Experience with grants management, financial compliance, and reporting
· Demonstrated experience in handling confidential information with discretion

Working Conditions
The Finance Director works in an office environment. Two schedule options are available: Monday-Friday with Monday remote, or Tuesday-Saturday fully onsite. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to attend board meetings, meet financial deadlines, and support special events.
