Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
- A master's degree (preferred) in Business Administration, Accounting, and Finance
- Bachelor’s degree consideration given with demonstrated accounting experience
- 3-5 years of demonstrated accounting experience
- Strong organizational skills, analytical skills, and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Excellent computer skills to include Microsoft office programs
- Excellent leadership and communication Skills
- Ability work independently as well as work as a team with other areas throughout the Campus
- Knowledgeable of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Coordinates all financial activities to develop systematic accountability

- Ensures that management has adequate reporting system for deliberation of problems and decision making
- Ensure that assigned accounting activities are carried out in accordance with established policies and procedures and generally accounting standards
- Lead the day-to-day activities, review and approve the works of various functions with Accounting Services
- Cross train, as needed, to assist other Accountant positions
- Provide input to the employee performance evaluation process
- Assure that assigned accounting reporting systems and procedures are in compliance with established administrative policies and procedures and acceptable accounting standards
- Analyze accounting control procedures. Document and maintain business processes
- Periodically review and recommend/implement improvements to standards and procedures
- Interpret financial reports and statements and identify problem areas
- Prepare complex financial statements and reports
- Analyze account balances and reconcile balances to external data
- Identify actual or potential problems, and recommend corrective or preventative action.
- Assist in correcting and reconciling General Ledger balances
- Assist in assuring that all transactions within the accounting office are in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures, internal controls and regulations required by the University and the Federal and State Governments.
- Review and determine that accounting procedures are consistent in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Prepares quarterly financial statements
- Assist in the Budget Process as needed
- Assist in providing oversight of the audit process
- Prepares financial reports requested by the Vice President for Finance & Administration
- Maintain compliance with Department of Education, HBCU Capital Financing covenant requirements and all accrediting entities
- Communicate and consult with the Vice President & Assistant VP for Finance & Administration regarding status of the various accounting and administrative functions
- Communicate with functional areas outside of the business office relating to financial procedures
- Ensure accuracy in financial reporting, general ledger transactions, preparing journal entries as needed
- Creating, implementing and monitoring internal controls
- Research, demonstrate, and apply proper accounting treatment per Financial Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
