Job Description
Provide Security, Safety, and Structure to the Youth at the Jasper County Juvenile Center. Maintain a safe, clean, professional environment to the youth and families of Jasper County.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise activities of juvenile detainees.
- Supervise the daily chores assigned to the youth, such as cleaning, laundering of detention clothes/bed linens and other laundry as needed, recreational activities, meal classroom periods, on a 24 hr. basis.
- Supervise telephone calls and visits by family members.
- Escort youth to designated areas in the facility when necessary.
- Must help in the providing of meals for juveniles.
- Apply CPI restraining techniques (training provided) when necessary.
- Attend to the Control Room , including telephones , monitors, electronic door systems, intercoms, radios, visual monitoring of detainees sleeping units/ movements, and maintain Activity Logs of such.
- Maintain the general cleanliness and order of the secure detention area, and provide for proper placement of all equipment and supplies.
- Assure proper maintenance of all equipment, including radios, chargers, intercoms, etc.
- Meet training/ certification requirements as prescribed by the Jasper County Youth Detention Facilities management and attend all mandatory staff meetings/ training sessions.
- Maintain a healthy and professional appearance by wearing a clean, assigned uniform (provided) that will pass inspection requirements.
- Keep physically fir to carry out the duties of a detention officer.
- Preform all intake procedures to include but not limited to search and personal property documentation.
- Submit Incident Reports and other reports on a timely basis.
- Computer requirements needed for this job include but are not limited to Microsoft Office, Excel, secure Case net, knowledge of and ability to use the statewide Juvenile Information System( JIS training provided.
- Understand and use mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect system.
- Any additional duties assigned by the Detention Superintendent , or Supervisors
Qualifications
- Must be at least twenty-one years of age with a High School Diploma or GED.
- Preference given to candidates with college degrees/ credits or Associate’s Degree in the area of Child Development, psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or related fields.
- Minimum of 1(one) years’ experience in a youth- related program.
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to handle stressful situations with courtesy and good judgement
- Create and maintain a positive image and rapport with youth, law enforcement officials, co-workers and the public.
- Pass drug/alcohol test prior to and as a condition of continued employment.
- Meet physical standards in a post job offer physical examination.
- Must have no criminal or child abuse/neglect history. Must attend all trainings required to maintain employment. This includes, but is not limited to: CPI Restraint Certification, CPR, First Aid, Med I Certification, Class E Driver’s License, Suicide Prevention, and PREA.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Maintain a clear driving record. License must not have been suspended or revoked during the past three years.
- Work flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Travel locally and out of town when necessary.
- Jasper County Juvenile Center is a smoke /nicotine free facility which includes parking areas.
- Staff are not allowed to leave the property during a 12 hr shift
- Regular time sensitive attendance
- Work a posted shift schedule and when needed work all shifts required and any mandatory overtime, weekends and/ or Holidays.
- Must be willing to work the 12 hr shifts.
