General Summary of the Position
The Senior Mechanical Engineer leads mechanical design efforts for natural gas projects, ensuring systems meet technical, safety, and regulatory standards. This role specializes in pipe stress analysis, equipment selection, and troubleshooting mechanical challenges to optimize system reliability and efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (following are accountabilities included but not limited to):
- Lead mechanical engineering efforts for natural gas processing facilities, ensuring project designs meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform pipe stress analysis and calculations to assess the integrity and reliability of piping systems under various operating conditions.
- Develop and review mechanical design specifications, drawings, and technical documentation for equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, and piping systems.
- Oversee the selection, procurement, and installation of mechanical equipment, ensuring compliance with industry codes and standards.
- Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and failure mode analyses to optimize mechanical system performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including process, I&E, and other engineers, to ensure seamless project execution.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and startup phases, resolving mechanical engineering challenges as they arise.
- Ensure mechanical designs comply with industry standards such as ASME B31.3/B31.5, API, and NFPA, as well as company policies and safety regulations.
- Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and technical expertise to support professional development.
- Continuously evaluate emerging technologies and industry best practices to drive innovation and efficiency in mechanical engineering processes.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong expertise in pipe stress analysis using software such as CAESAR II or equivalent tools.
- Ability to read Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.
- Ability to create and maintain equipment specification data sheets.
- Proficiency in mechanical design software, including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and finite element analysis (FEA) tools.
- Ability to interpret and apply industry codes and standards, including ASME B31.3, API 610, and ASME Section VIII.
- Knowledge of other related codes and standards considered a plus.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, vendors, and stakeholders.
- Experience in the preparation of proposals and presentations.
- Experience in analyzing and preparing technical requirements.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to price various options and present cost estimates for proposals in an easily understood format using Excel spreadsheets.
- Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
- Familiarity with 3D drafting software.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
Education, Training and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in the natural gas or energy industry.
- Extensive experience performing pipe stress analysis and mechanical system evaluations.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
- Experience with project lifecycle phases, from conceptual design to construction and commissioning.
- Experience utilizing Caesar II or equivalent software.
Work Context
- Regularly works in the Corporate Office in Whitehouse but may be required to visit fabrication facilities or client locations as needed. At those locations, must be able to work in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and other particles.
