Description
Purpose: The Assistant Maintenance will align his/her scope of work with Jawonio’ s mission, while incorporating Jawonio’s Core Values as the guiding principle for all work activities.
Summary: As the Assistant Maintenance, you will be directly responsible for creating a safe, healthy, barrier free, and productive work environment for Jawonio’s individuals, employees, and visitors by performing building and grounds work, to ensure the proper operation and performance of equipment, building systems, and grounds.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of and following OSHA guidelines such as: lockout-tag out, equipment guards, grounding, and person protective equipment.
- Safe and proper use of common hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, saws, drills, wrenches, electrical meter, and hammers.
- Maintains safe, orderly work area and work practices.
- Knowledge of building codes and proper building system operation.
- Perform proper preventive maintenance to ensure that building components continue to perform as designed and in a healthy and safe manner.
- Reports unsafe conditions to supervisor upon their discovery, documenting the circumstances as requested or necessary.
- Requires the understanding and use of operating, installation, specification sheets and repair manuals, blueprints, and parts catalogs.
- Knows standard industry electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and masonry practice.
- Diagnose building system problems and determine the best way to correct them – HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire, roofing, electrical, domestic, water, and pool.
- Inspections and check lists – conduct safety inspections of fire alarm system, kitchen areas, bathrooms, residence, and work areas. Reports any deficiencies to the Site Director and documents as required or requested.
- Preventive maintenance – winterizes facility, inspects walkways and driveways, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters.
- Minor repairs and maintenance duties – changing light bulbs, plunging, and snaking of toilets and sinks, replace defective electrical switches, fixtures and devices, Repair or replace defective plumbing fixtures, priming well and water workings, fixing piping, paint structure, equipment and finishes, Repairs masonry, sheet rock walls.
- Minor rearrangements – hanging shelves, paintings, and other material, moving furniture, installation of sinks and toilets.
- Performs minor repairs around the facility, including painting, changing light bulbs, general cleaning.
- Maintain pool during summer months as specified by supervisor, checking pump, maintaining proper chemical levels, painting, and monitor filter. Maintain keep records. Keeps pool clean and free of debris.
- Utilizing snowplow attached to agency vehicle, shovels, and other equipment needed to ensure the agency grounds are safe and hazard free. Sanding/Salting the roadways and walkways.
- Cutting grass, trimming trees and shrubs, weeding, raking, sweeping, keeping area clean, and removal of litter and debris.

Education/Experience:
High school/GED plus two years’ experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Must possess basic to intermediate carpentry, electrical, plumbing and masonry knowledge and skills.
- Must have a full working knowledge of the associated tools.
- Must possess basic troubleshooting skills; capable of diagnosing building system problems and determine best means of repairing (outsource or internal repair) to include Heating, Ventilation, plumbing, electrical, fire, roofing, domestic water.
- Must know how to prepare surfaces and paint or stain.
- Must know how to use repair manuals, understand blueprints, specification sheets, and parts catalogs.
- Remain current in all NYS Justice Center, OPWDD as well as agency required trainings.
- Must be clear and maintain an acceptable record under the Medicaid Fraud & Abuse clearance process.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record a minimum of two years as per our insurance company.
- We will accept driver’s license in New York or New Jersey only.
- Must cooperate and participate fully with Jawonio and/or Justice Center and OPWDD during an investigation or inspection, including making verbal and written statements as requested by the person(s) doing the investigation.
