Job Summary: The IT Security Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the security of all technology systems and data within Georgetown County School District. This position will work closely with IT staff, administrators, faculty, and students to safeguard the district's network, systems, and sensitive information from cybersecurity threats. The IT Security Coordinator will be a key player in the development, implementation, and monitoring of cybersecurity policies, training, incident response, and compliance with state and federal regulations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in cybersecurity, information security, or IT systems administration
- Experience in a K-12 or educational environment preferred
- Certifications (preferred but not required)
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)\
- Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
- CompTIA Security GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC)
- Cisco Certified Cyber Ops Associate
- In-depth knowledge of network security, data protection, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and encryption technologies
- Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST, CIS, or ISO 27001
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff in an easily understandable way
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as District Administration may find appropriate and acceptable
Essential Duties:
Cybersecurity Strategy & Planning:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive cybersecurity program tailored to the needs of the district.
- Lead the creation and enforcement of cybersecurity policies and procedures in accordance with best practices, industry standards, and legal requirements.
- Work with senior district leadership to assess cybersecurity risks and determine priorities.
- Network & Systems Security:
- Monitor and analyze network traffic, user activity, and system logs for potential threats or vulnerabilities.
- Manage the district’s firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and antivirus tools to prevent unauthorized access.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and penetration tests on district networks and systems.
- Incident Response & Recovery:
- Develop and maintain an incident response plan for responding to cybersecurity breaches or attacks.
- Act as the lead during cybersecurity incidents, ensuring effective response, investigation, and documentation.
- Work with law enforcement and other entities when necessary to address data breaches or cyberattacks.
- Training & Awareness:
- Develop and deliver cybersecurity training for staff, students, and administrators to increase awareness of security risks and safe technology practices.
- Provide ongoing education on phishing, password management, safe internet browsing, and other cybersecurity topics.
- Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure the district complies with applicable laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., FERPA, CIPA, HIPAA).
- Regularly report on cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, and incident response efforts to district leadership.
- Collaborate with auditors and external partners to evaluate the district's cybersecurity posture.
- Collaboration & Support:
- Work closely with IT staff to integrate cybersecurity best practices into network, hardware, and software management.
- Serve as a resource for teachers and administrators regarding technology safety and security issues.
- Collaborate with external cybersecurity consultants and agencies when necessary.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Stay current with trends and developments in the cybersecurity field and evaluate emerging threats to K-12 environments.
- Recommend and implement improvements to the district’s cybersecurity infrastructure based on new technologies or changing risks.

Work Requirements:
- Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional after-hours or weekend work required to address cybersecurity incidents.
