Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Normal Work Hours/Days: 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Monday- Friday. On-call responsibilities will include weekend, night, and holiday coverage.
The Residential Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is a direct provider of clinical nursing services for consumers in the Authority's residential programs. This employee is responsible for providing nursing care and monitoring the health care maintenance needs of the clients of the home. This employee works under the direction of the Director of Nursing.

Primary Job Functions
- Assist in an assessment of the physical, psychological and social dimensions of the consumers
- Initiates the nursing assessment utilizing their knowledge of the nursing process
- Recognizes, identifies and communicates problem areas related to the provision of the care of consumers
- Communicates pertinent information regarding consumers to on coming staff
- Communicates with supervisor as necessary about consumer and program needs
- Identifies and implements consumer teaching needs
- Recognizes and reports changes in client condition
- Willingness to successfully complete MAS training within 30 days of hire
- Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
- Provides individualized goal directed care to the consumers under in accordance with the Consumer Recovery Plan for Person-Centered Treatment
- Implements clinical aspects of care and nursing orders in a safe, responsible, and time efficient manner
- Intervenes to meet client needs, with proper technique and safety precautions
- Answers and responds courteously and promptly to consumer needs
- Administers medications and monitors effects, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse
- Works with the mental health/MAC worker in client supervision as needed
- Assists in transporting consumers to medical appointments and Day program
- Records all medications accurately in the electronic MAR
- Clearly documents observations and actions in accordance with the treatment plan and nursing care plan
- Records any changes in consumers condition or behavior in the electronic health record
- Completes charting in descriptive, detailed manner as guided by established documentation policies
- Functions within the scope of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act
- Knows and assists in supporting the philosophy, policies, and standards of the Authority
- Responds promptly and courteously to consumers needs
- Maintains open and collaborative communication with other staff
- Establishes rapport with consumers
- Acts as consumer advocate when appropriate
- Acts as role model to other staff regarding professionalism and accountability for care provided
- Demonstrates knowledge of role in fire and other emergency procedures
- Attends annual required in-services and certifications
- Knowledge of psychotropic medication uses, side effects and drug interactions
- Knowledge of psychiatric symptoms, treatment and basic behavioral and nursing interventions
- Knowledge of general medical problems and nursing care needed
- Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel including non-nursing personnel
- Able to make assessments of consumer needs and respond within the scope of LPN licensure
- Ability to work independently and exercise clinical judgment
- Technical nursing skills including basic wound care, first aid, CPR, medication administration
- Ability to seek out assistance as needed
- Easily adapts to change
- Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse Licensure
- Two (2) or more years in general medical nursing
- Two (2) or more years working with individuals with serious mental illnesses
- Valid Alabama drivers license and driving record acceptable to agency automobile insurance carrier for inclusion on agency policy
