Job Summary:
The Pipe Layer is responsible for the installation of underground utilities such as stormwater, sanitary sewer, and water mains on construction sites. Working under the supervision of the Pipe Foreman, the Pipe Layer ensures proper alignment, grade, and jointing of pipes in accordance with construction drawings and specifications. This role plays a vital part in site development and infrastructure projects, ensuring that pipe systems are installed safely, efficiently, and with a high level of precision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ground & Trench Preparation:
    • Prepare trenches for pipe installation by clearing, leveling, and shaping according to plan specifications.
    • Ensure trench safety and compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Pipe Installation & Alignment:
    • Lay and align pipe accurately using lasers, levels, and transits.
    • Install various types of pipes (PVC, RCP, HDPE, DIP, Ductile Iron) at the correct line and grade.
    • Assist with joining and securing pipe using gaskets, fittings, or welding techniques.
  • Equipment & Tool Usage:
    • Operate or assist with the operation of building and setting trench boxes, operating compactors, haul trucks, excavators, and loaders as needed.
    • Use hand tools and small equipment to fit, cut, and adjust pipe sections as needed.
  • Site & Safety Maintenance:
    • Maintain clean and organized work areas, free of unnecessary debris or hazards.
    • Follow safety policies, wear required PPE, and report unsafe conditions immediately.
Quality Assurance:
    • Check for and correct leaks or alignment issues during the installation process.
    • Assist with backfilling and compacting around installed pipes to prevent shifting or settling.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the Pipe Foreman, equipment operators, and laborers to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Department Specific Responsibilities:
  • Assist with installation of underground piping systems for new construction, utility replacements, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Support storm, sanitary, and water projects under varying site conditions.

Required Knowledge & Skills:
  • Physical Stamina:
    • Requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Manual Dexterity:
    • Needs good hand-eye coordination and the ability to work with tools.
  • Blueprint Reading:
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Construction Experience:
    • Prior experience in construction or related fields is beneficial.
  • Safety Awareness:
    • Strong understanding of safety procedures and regulations.
  • Problem-Solving Skills:
    • Ability to identify and resolve issues that arise during pipe installation.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other workers.
  • Training:
    • Completion of an apprenticeship is preferred.
