Scope and Purpose
This position helps the Superintendent provide high quality golf courses and total guest satisfaction through diagnosing specific diseases and treating insects that affect critical areas of the courses.
Essential Functions
- Identify and treat unwanted vegetation, using both preventative and curative methods, by spraying prescribed amounts of fertilizer, insecticide, herbicide and fungicide using hoses and a truck-mounted tank, taking care not to injure turf or shrubs.
- Fill sprayer tank with chemicals and water according to formula, using hose or pump. Pull spray hose from truck mounted reel, turn knob, press lever, and point nozzle selected according to site characteristics, such as type of infestation, wind direction and velocity, and terrain. May use portable spray equipment.
- Assist the Superintendent with correct calibrations of all spray equipment.
- Assist in the use and establishment of an Integrated Pest Management program, including planning current and long-term spray programs.
- Maintain daily spray records.
- Assist the Superintendent in maintaining proper chemical inventory.
- Post notification of any spray application to customers, golfers and employees.
- Responsible for the direct preventative maintenance of all equipment associated with the task of spraying.
- Read, understand and keep current with all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Post where necessary, distribute to all helpers and keep in an area accessible at all times.
- Perform routine safety inspections on all spray equipment.
- Maintain chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with the county, state and Federal regulations. Responsible for the safety of all helpers.
- Attend monthly and weekly staff meetings (including all training and safety meetings).
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of fertilizers and pesticides, and their application techniques and purpose.
- Ability to recognize healthy and unhealthy turf.
- Knowledge of spray equipment and its safe operation as it pertains golf course maintenance.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations required for calibrations.
- Extensive knowledge of the repair and maintenance of spray equipment utilizing industry standards.
- Extensive knowledge of the tools, supplies, materials and their function in the repair and maintenance of spray equipment.
- Ability to recognize, communicate and/or resolve horticultural and spray challenges.
- Knowledge of golf course maintenance techniques and methods.
- Ability to identify plant species common to the southwest region and the identification of weeds and diseases.
- Ability to identify insects and other pests.
- Leadership abilities.
- Ability to work alone with limited supervision, follow instructions and be detail-oriented.
Physical Requirements
Constant standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, grasping, seeing, hearing, talking, smelling. Frequent pushing, pulling and lifting in excess of 80 pounds.
Work Environment
Work environment is typical of an open golf course. The temperature and weather conditions of the work area are affected by outside conditions. The use of fertilizers, pesticides, and equipment fluids will create odors. Areas where landscaping equipment are stored may have grass and other landscaping clippings and dirt on the floor. Machinery may contain dirt, oil, and/or grease. Shops are not heated in the winter or cooled in the summer.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent certificate preferred but not required.
- Mathematical training required to perform calibrations.
- One to three years of golf course maintenance experience required.
- Completion of training requirements as required by state and Federal agencies, including those required by OSHA Hazardous Communication Standards is required.
- Current state certification or licensing as pesticide applicator is required.
- American Red Cross first-aid training is required.
- Valid Arizona Drivers License.
