SUMMARY: Maintain assigned District facilities to consistently high standards through repairs and installations on grounds, landscaping, athletic fields and playgrounds. Maintain a safe, comfortable and secure learning environment for students, staff and the public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment or systems in at least one of the following areas: fence, irrigation systems or landscaping.

Inspect, operate and maintain various light equipment, portable air compressors, small trailers, high pressure washers, chain saws, etc.

Inspect, operate and maintain vehicles and equipment from light duty trucks up to single-axle dump trucks with trailers.

Operate, inspect and maintain equipment to include loaders and tractors with attachments.

Remove graffiti using high pressure washer.

Perform snow and ice removal with plow units or shovels as required.

Apply herbicides, insecticides and pesticides as needed.

Sweep and paint parking lots and play pads.

Respond to emergencies.

Operate oxy-acetelene torch and perform welding tasks.

Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required, plus vocational school or short term courses.

EXPERIENCE: One year of related work experience in one of the following depending on the District's needs: landscaping, sprinkler systems maintenance/installation, fence repair and installation, sign fabrication, or playground equipment repair/installation. Technical training may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Requires basic communication skills including: reading, writing, and knowledge of English. Ability to operate various hand and power tools. Must be able to operate light and heavy duty equipment within six months of hire.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Valid Colorado driver's license required.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. This position directs the work of seasonal part-time employees.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons in same or other work units/buildings regarding routine internal matters. Daily contact with students and outside users to provide service. Weekly contact with parents to furnish information and the general public to provide service. Monthly contact with vendors or suppliers regarding routine internal matters.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self to bruises due to lifting heavy objects. Medium exposure to self to cuts, fractured bones and hernia due to lifting heavy objects, operating hand/power tools and operating heavy equipment. Low exposure to self to the following conditions: chemical burns from spraying herbicides; heat burns from high pressure spray and torch; disease due to animals (prairie dogs, etc.) with disease; repetitive motion from operating hand tools; loss of limb from operating hand tools and heavy equipment; loss of sight from operating sprayer and herbicides; disfigurement/fatality from operating heavy equipment and power lines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze and communicate. The employee is frequently required to compare, coordinate, evaluate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is occasionally required to copy, instruct, compute, synthesize, compile and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by Group Leader and work orders. This position requires independent thinking to determine when it is safe to work in various conditions (i.e. students are present). Errors in decision making could lead to injury, damaged equipment or inadequate job completion, and could impact building, students, etc. Decision making requires collaboration with Group Leader, Area Grounds Worker Journey, Area Ground Worker Lead, Building Engineer or Principal. Work is guided by District and Department guidelines, State/Municipal Building codes and industry standards.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training in landscaping, wood/metal fences, tie walls, sprinkler systems, sign making, painting, playground equipment and operation of light/heavy equipment. Position requires technical skills to perform industry accepted standards in construction, installation and maintenance of landscaping systems.
