ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT


The Facilities Department is responsible for maintaining, servicing and improving the Jeffco Public Schools' 12 million square feet of schools and support buildings, valued at nearly $2.75 billion on 3,100 acres of land. The Facilities Department includes more than 700 employees in Building Maintenance and Site Maintenance, Construction Management, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Energy Management, Facilities Service Desk, and Planning & Property. Overall Duties include boundaries, long-range facility planning, enrollment projections, energy and utility management, capital and bond-funded improvements, custodial services, facilities assessments, facilities maintenance, hazardous material management, landscape and paving, property management, snow removal, water and wastewater management.

The work location for this position is located in the West Area Shop. A resume and MVR review are required. A written and practical test may be required.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT


The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES


SUMMARY: Manage and coordinate the work assignments of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, structural, structural/lock, and semi-skilled trades technicians. Maintain a safe, comfortable, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and the public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Organize, prioritize, schedule, assign job tasks, and inspect completed work.

Coordinate with school-based personnel, outside contractors, and other departments to insure projects are completed to customer's satisfaction.

Consult in all facets of construction projects. Review plans and specifications and attend design and construction meetings.

Inform Manager of work progress and personnel issues.

Assist Manager in budget management.

Train personnel and implement new programs and procedures.

Promote job safety, hold safety meetings, and review monthly safety records.

Supervise and coordinate manpower, materials, and equipment related to call -outs and emergencies.

Prepare cost estimates and order materials and equipment.

Support trade technicians in completion of work, and work in primary trade as needed.

Resolve personnel, project, and scheduling conflicts.

Prepare and present annual performance evaluations, and recommend promotion and disciplinary actions to supervisor. Assist with the implementation of growth plans.

Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required, plus technical courses in building trades. Asbestos training (16 hours).

EXPERIENCE: 7 years experience in maintenance, repairs and construction in a trade, 5 years experience in Jefferson County Public Schools Facilities Services preferred. One year of Leadership experience preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT Intermediate communication, writing, math, and computer skills. Journey level skill in one building trade and working knowledge of other building trades. Ability to work flexible shifts. Operating knowledge of and experience with Windows, word processing applications, and power tool operation. Operating knowledge of Maintenance Management System and email within 6 months after hire. Metasys training must be completed within 12 months after hire. Operating knowledge of spreadsheet applications preferred. Must pass basic computer skills assessment test prior to hire.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Valid Colorado driver's license.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: Directly supervises 8-15 employees in the Facilities Services Department. Positions supervised include Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Structural, and Structural/Lock Journey level positions; and semi-skilled technician. Spends over 75% of time conducting supervisory responsibilities. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and assisting supervisor with interviewing, hiring, disciplining, and terminating. Acts as a technical resource to all trades and District school-based personnel, and to subordinates by providing training related to technical areas and District policies and procedures.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within/outside department/building to furnish information, maintain relationships, and negotiate controversial and/or confidential matters; with vendors/suppliers to resolve problems or negotiate matters; and with Public Service Company, fire departments, and water department to maintain relationships. Weekly/Monthly contact with Design Advisory Group to maintain relationships. Monthly/Annual contact with applicants to furnish or exchange information.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Medium exposure to self and others to cuts and bruises due to equipment use. Low exposure to self and others to chemical burns due to chemicals and cleaners, to loss of limb and disfigurement due to tools and equipment, to loss of sight due to tools and chemicals, and to fatality due to electricity. Low exposure to self to heat burns due to electricity and boiler, to fractures due to falls, to hernia due to lifting, to repetitive motion injuries due to using tools, and to disease due to exposure to environmental hazards.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, coordinate, compute, and evaluate. The employee is occasionally required to copy, instruct, synthesize, compile, and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by work requests and needs, state and local requirements, and Manager. This position requires technical knowledge, ability to prioritize work, and supervisory skills to determine level of urgency and appropriate actions to rectify problems, and to effectively allocate manpower and resources. Work is guided by state and local building codes, agency (fire, water/sanitation, EPA, etc.) requirements, District policies, CSEA contract, department procedures, department technical specifications and priority systems, and budgetary requirements. Decision making requires collaboration with Manager, area technicians, and school-based personnel. Errors in decision making could include failing to respond appropriately to a building system failure, possibly leading to property loss and/or jeopardizing the life, health, safety, and/or educational process of occupants. Errors could also include mismanagement of resources, leading to over-/under-spending budget dollars, poor customer service, and/or excess workload. Manager is involved only in major decisions.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training in supervision, purchasing requirements, maintenance requirements, working knowledge of other trades, personnel policies and procedures, and journey level skill in one trade. Duties cross over into several departments on a daily basis.
