ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT


The Facilities Department is responsible for maintaining, servicing and improving the Jeffco Public Schools' 12 million square feet of schools and support buildings, valued at nearly $2.75 billion on 3,100 acres of land. The Facilities Department includes more than 700 employees in Building Maintenance and Site Maintenance, Construction Management, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Energy Management, Facilities Service Desk, and Planning & Property. Overall Duties include boundaries, long-range facility planning, enrollment projections, energy and utility management, capital and bond-funded improvements, custodial services, facilities assessments, facilities maintenance, hazardous material management, landscape and paving, property management, snow removal, water and wastewater management.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT


The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES


SUMMARY: Perform journey level skills in the areas of asphalt, concrete, drainage, snow removal, temporary classroom relocations, and excavation while maintaining a safe and comfortable educational environment. Operate light to medium equipment, with exposure to heavy equipment, at journey level. Provide support to Facilities Maintenance Department, capital improvement projects, and new construction management. Direct the work of coworkers as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Perform with journey level proficiency asphalt construction, overlays, and maintenance. Operate and maintain paving machine, rollers, and patch truck. Coordinate site preparation, hauling, and raking, and directly handle asphalt and some associated hazardous materials.

Execute loading, transporting with proper permits, and setting up of temporary classrooms, daily on a seasonal basis.

Operate and maintain light to medium equipment, with exposure to heavy equipment, at journey level, including excavating for utilities; preparing site; assisting with drainage projects; and maintaining District grounds, properties, and roadways. Support and assist other trades and zones within District.

Perform with journey level proficiency and to building trade standards concrete construction, replacement, and maintenance. Coordinate site preparation. Form and finish walls, flat work, curb and gutter, steps, caissons, and drainage structures.

Transport materials and equipment using single axle trucks and/or tractor-trailers. Inspect and insure that all vehicles meet requirements set forth by local, state, and federal regulations.

Oversee and train lesser skilled employees and temporary employees as required.

Evaluate job site and tasks, and design and decide methods, equipment, and materials. Estimate materials and time. Schedule and order materials. Coordinate job tasks, plans, and safety precautions with Principals, staff members, and Group Leaders.

Work from drawings, schematics, and/or blueprints.

Comply with city, county, state, and federal codes and regulations by obtaining necessary permits, preparing and submitting necessary documents timely, and recognizing utility location symbols.

Design, construct, install, and maintain above and below ground drainage systems and structures. Plow snow and sand, weekly on a seasonal basis. Maintain snow removal equipment.

Weld, maintain, and hard surface heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and snow equipment. Fabricate hand rails, tread-plates, and truck racks, as specified by work and service orders. Assist zone HVAC journey workers with repairing boilers and piping.

Perform masonry. Construct and maintain block, brick, tile, and tuck/point. Use specialized saws within the trade. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required.

EXPERIENCE: 5 years combined experience in asphalt, concrete, drainage, welding, excavation, light to medium equipment operation, and/or classroom relocations. Must have at least 2 years' experience in one of the trades.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Journey level skill in asphalt, concrete, drainage, excavation, welding, or classroom relocation. Ability to work flexible shifts/hours. Operating knowledge of and experience with light to medium equipment (e.g., backhoes, loader, bobcat, trencher, paver, forklift, roller, asphalt patch truck, street sweeper, hydraulic crane, and utility tractor), commercial vehicles (e.g., single axle dump truck (5 yd.)), single axle tractors, snowplow vehicles, and lowboy trailers), and specialized power tools and equipment (e.g., tampers, compactors, arc welder, wire feed welder, acetylene torch, compressors, jack hammers, masonry saw, mixers, power sewer cleaners, portable water pumps, portable generators, and house moving jacks). Must pass written and practical tests prior to hire.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Class A Commercial Driver's License required within 6 months of hire date. Flagger certifications preferred. Must pass District Pre-Employment physical.

Person with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: May be required to plan and direct work of other Pavement/Equipment - Journey positions, lesser skilled technicians, and seasonal employees. When required, less than 50% of time is spent conducting the supervisory responsibilities. Acts as a technical resource for other technicians, new employees, and seasonal employees by providing training when needed.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within/outside department/building to resolve problems and negotiate matters. Weekly contact with vendors/suppliers to order materials and with general public to maintain relationships. Monthly contact with inspectors to resolve compliance problems or negotiate matters and with law enforcement officers to maintain traffic control during concrete, asphalt, and building relocation activities.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self to bruises, cuts, heat burns, repetitive motion injuries, loss of limb, loss of sight, and disfigurement due to power equipment and vehicle accidents. Medium exposure to self to chemical burns due to working with solvents, cleaners, and fumes, and to hernia due to lifting. Medium exposure to self to fractured bones and fatality due to power equipment and vehicle accidents. Low exposure to self to disease due to exposure to sewage. Also, duties of this job may impact the safety of others (medium to high exposure) if precautions are not taken when working where others are present and if work is done poorly and does not meet required specifications or codes for safety.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, coordinate, and negotiate. The employee is occasionally required to copy, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, and compile.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by Group Leader or Assistant Group Leader. This position requires application of journey level technical knowledge and analytical skills to evaluate a job; determine required methods, materials, and equipment; schedule and coordinate safety precautions; and direct the work of others as needed. Work is guided by District policies, technician specifications, state, and federal codes and regulations pertaining to educational facilities & the operation of commercial motor vehicles. Decision making requires collaboration with Supervisors, Group Leaders, coworkers, Principals, and school staff. Errors in decision making could include inadvertently cutting natural gas or electric lines, resulting in serious injury to self or others, evacuation of site, and/or additional time and money. Supervisor is involved only in major decisions.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross-training in equipment and commercial vehicle operation, computing, measuring, mechanical skills, estimating, and basic supervision. Duties and actions impact individuals across several departments and the public.
