POSITION TITLE: Guidance Counselor Grades 6-12
FLSA: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Teaching experience preferred.
- School Counseling experience preferred.
- Demonstrated success in mediation & relationship building.
- Knowledge of Missouri’s Model Guidance Program.
OVERVIEW:
Applications are being accepted for a 12-month school counselor for Jefferson City Academic Center. This position will begin on July 1, 2025. The person selected for the position will lead the JCAC counseling team as well as assist students with academic and personal issues, and work in conjunction with the administrative team to support students and their families.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Ability to lead a team
- Counseling students individually in problem-solving skills, communication skills, and decision-making skills.
- Conducting initial counseling in crisis situations and making referrals to community resources as necessary
- Assisting parents and administration with referrals and exchange of information about community resources as required
- Consulting with students, teachers, parents, and administration regarding academic progress to assist students in resolving issues and modifying behavior
- Participating with multi-disciplinary teams regarding special needs students/504 students to include staffing, consulting, testing, and recommending for appropriate accommodations
- Enrolling and assisting new students in acclimation to school’s procedures, learning opportunities, and extracurricular activities
- Tracking student progress toward completion by developing and implementing an educational plan and credit check
- Assisting students and parents annually in course selection and enrollment for the next school year
- Providing information to students and parents regarding educational resources, such as A tutors, summer academy, correspondence courses, and study-skills materials
- Advising students who have not made sufficient progress toward graduation of their enrollment status for the following school year
- Summer school planning and preparation
- Other duties as assigned
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Attend all meetings and training sessions as directed.
- Assist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized tests scores for students and parents.
- Attend IEP and 504 meetings according to caseload.
- Duties as assigned by building principal.
