Essential Responsibilities And Duties
In collaboration with administrators, principals and educators, the assistant superintendent for elementary education will provide positive and strategic leadership to inspire, achieve and maintain a shared mission and vision for learning.
Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing a department; supervising the use of funds. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.

- Develop goals, objectives, and priorities for elementary education programs that support the district’s vision, mission, values, goals and initiatives.
- Develop, support and collaboratively work with boards and advisory groups.
- Serve as the elementary education program coordinator and serve as a conduit for information for all elementary schools, other district administrators and the superintendent's office.
- Maintain positive community and parent relations that promote active engagement and appreciation of diversity.
- Assist building administrators and staff with the establishment of programs and committees.
- Provide district-wide leadership to ensure quality educational/instructional programs dedicated to improving performance and enabling students to meet their personal, academic, and career goals.
- Provide leadership and support to building administrators to ensure instructional leadership is effective at the elementary level.
- Assist with elementary curriculum development.
- Develop and/or lead district initiatives to enhance education outcomes.
- Work with building administrators to address behavior and disciplinary situations.
- Recruit, attract, develop, and retain highly qualified staff to carry out the district's mission, goals, and objectives.
- Ensure a positive, collaborative and educational environment dedicated to student success.
- Annually evaluate elementary principals. Ensure effective employee development and a culture dedicated to continuous learning and improvement of professional practice.
- Provide supervision and leadership to principals on the daily operations of schools.
- Effectively manage school resources including operations and financial.
- Oversee compliance with district policies, DESE reporting requirements and legal regulations.
- Perform other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of the school district.

- SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects and programs; overseeing program financial activities; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and administering personnel policies and procedures; organization and planning; data analysis and report writing; negotiating; supervision; and budget planning.
- KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include state and federal laws; BOE policies and procedures; crisis management; disciplinary process and procedures; school management and administration; curriculum development; current business and industry needs/analysis.
- ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working with multiple projects, frequent interruptions, and changing work priorities; working with detailed information/data and maintaining accurate records; maintaining confidentiality; and facilitating communication between persons with frequently divergent positions.
