2025 Internship program information
The purpose of the internship is to provide an opportunity for students to obtain work experience in the public health space. In addition, students will acquire skills and knowledge that will be useful in their career search upon graduation. Students will interact with technical experts in their areas of study. JCDH will in turn receive valuable assistance in the development, implementation, and ongoing operation of their programs. *This is a paid internship opportunity. Students can work up to one year from their hire date if they are enrolled in school. *JCDH does not offer work sponsorship.

Eligibility: Summer Intern (Classification No. 92732 Unclassified):
- Student must be currently enrolled in an accredited university/college and have completed their freshman year by May 2025.
- Student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Student must have a valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
- Student must pass a pre-employment background check.
- Student must be eligible to work in the United States and provide required documentation.
Pay Rate:
- $15.00/ hour
Finance and Administration
Purchasing Division (Accounting/Finance majors)
The intern will assist with research, filling, data entry, updating contract files and filling systems, assist with receiving and filling inventory orders and other duties as assigned. The intern will also assist as needed in accounting department with data entry and filing.
Accounting Division (Accounting/Finance majors)
The intern will inventory all JCDH’s fixed assets, assist with research, filling, data entry, recording and maintaining accurate and complete financial records.
Pharmacy
Medication management
- Assist Pharmacy Technician load medication cabinet/pyxis machines
- Assist in inventory counts
- Assist in Med/Vax recalls and return procedures
- Assist in Narcan management and deliveries
Pharmacy Public Health
- Experience Public Health from Clinical Service perspective
- Partner with Vaccine Planning team’s Back to School Shot Rush campaign
- Attend Public Health strategic meetings
Information Technology
The Management of Information Systems Department at the Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented summer intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of information systems management and support. The intern will work closely with our experienced team members, gaining valuable insights into the operations of a public health organization and contributing to meaningful projects that impact our community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Computer Decommissioning and Staging: The intern will assist with the decommissioning of outdated computers, ensuring that all data is securely wiped before disposal. They will also help with the staging of new computers, including installing operating systems, configuring settings, and preparing the devices for use by staff members.
- Software Testing: The intern will conduct thorough testing of web applications, mobile applications, and various user scenarios to ensure that our software solutions are functional, user-friendly, and meet the needs of our staff and clients. This includes identifying and reporting bugs, suggesting improvements, and collaborating with developers to implement changes.
- PC Technician Support: The intern will provide support in PC technician roles, which involves communicating with end users to understand their technical issues, tracking down information to resolve problems, interacting with vendors to obtain necessary resources, writing clear and concise documentation, searching for drivers, and researching new and improved approaches to enhance our IT infrastructure.
Environmental Health Services
Community Environmental Protection Division (Public Health majors)
The workload involves performing a wide variety of administrative and technical assignments. Technical duties include monthly inspection of seasonal public swimming pools and spas. Inspections consist of a thorough examination of the pool site, including the filtration and disinfection systems, and water chemistry testing to ensure that Department rules and regulations for public swimming pools and spas are met.
Food & Lodging Protection Division (Public Health Majors)
The workload involves performing a wide variety of administrative and technical assignments. Technical duties include daily inspection of summer feeding program locations including, schools, churches, public housing community centers, and recreational and camp facilities.
Disease Control
Prevention and Epidemiology Division (Public Health and Health Education Majors)
Jefferson County Department of Health Prevention and Epidemiology Division conducts surveillance and investigates Alabama notifiable diseases and outbreaks occurring in Jefferson County. In addition, the division provides guidance to healthcare providers and education to the public. This internship allows students to assist with community education (both written and oral), investigations, and special projects. The intern will be responsible for extracting relevant information for webpages that provide disease education and control measures. In addition, the intern will be responsible for delivering the Happy Healthy Hands education program to local schools and daycares. Data visualization, analysis, and evaluation may also be required. Computer proficiency and knowledge of epidemiological processes are necessary for this position.
Clinical Services Administration
Interns working in Clinical Services will assist with administrative duties associated with JCDH medical and dental clinics, answer telephone calls and provide public health information to the public, review immunization records and provide certificate of immunizations, enter vaccine records into state vaccine registry, provide administrative support during community events and back to school vaccine clinics, scan documents in electronic medical records, assist in the Lab with QC review, specimen pickup/delivery and supply inventory
