JOB SUMMARY
The position involves promoting justice by enforcing the laws of the State of Missouri through criminal prosecution. The purpose of this position is to review, recommend charges and prosecute cases from assignment to final disposition by trial or guilty plea. Assignments include a high volume of criminal misdemeanor and traffic cases in addition to assigned felonies under the supervision of a felony attorney. This position may be assigned to prosecute criminal bad checks and/or delinquent taxes. They may also be assigned to treatment courts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Represents the State in misdemeanor docket, Director of Revenue cases, jury trials, motion and bond hearings, preliminary hearings and guilty pleas.
- Reviews cases to determine trial strategies, subpoena witnesses, and to request additional investigations.
- Negotiates with defense attorneys.
- Interviews witnesses and victims. Meets with witnesses, victims and law enforcement regarding court appearances.
- Discusses plea negotiations with victims.
- Visits crime scenes and examines evidence.
- Handles depositions.
- Researches various points of law, prepares motions, appeals, responses and arguments.
- Prepares legal briefs and memos.
- Prepares and files criminal charges.
- Prepares charged cases for hearings/ bench trials and jury trials.
- Prepares and conducts court dockets.
- Reviews warrant applications for charges. Assists with the preparation and review of search warrants for law enforcement.
- Participates in on-call rotation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited school of law;
- One (1) year general law practice experience with some litigation experience preferably in criminal law and prosecution, or;
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certificates:
- Admission to the Missouri State Bar;
- Must possess a valid State Driver’s license.
Special Requirements:
- May require early morning or late evening hours.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of civil and criminal procedures.
- Knowledge of legal terminology, forms, documents, procedures, and practices involved in composing, processing, and filing a variety of legal documents and reports.
- Knowledge of legal references and their contents.
- Knowledge of the methods of legal research.
- Knowledge of English composition and office management techniques.
- Knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Ability to gather, organize, and analyze data.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with professional staff and the public in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and poise.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to do legal work.
- Ability to operate computers with relevant software and word processing equipment.
- Ability to type a variety of correspondence.
- Ability to multi-task and make quick decisions.

Normal Entry Salary: $55,480.15 annually
