POSITION: School Nurse for the Second Grade Early Literacy Program


EMPLOYMENT TERM:
The Summer Second Grade Early Literacy Program will be M-F for 5 weeks and include all holidays. Half days, three hours of instruction and half day for staff. The successful applicant will be able to work the days the program is in operation.

Jefferson County Professional Salary Schedule, commensurate

with experience and education level

Prep days:


  • Must possess current West Virginia certification.


JOB SUMMARY:
Provide nursing/ health related services to the students and school community at assigned school(s)


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned):

  • Respond to student health issues at assigned school(s)
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the health service program for the assigned school(s)
  • Serve as a resource and consultant to the school staff, students and families on health related issues
  • Develop, write and implement health care plans for specific individual students, including Health Electronic Care Plans (HECP)
  • Maintain and update knowledge and understanding of WVBOE Policy 2422.7 Standards of Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedures and the Health Care Procedures Manual
  • Participate in establishing procedures for emergency care of student injuries/illnesses
  • Develop and implement procedures and programs for the prevention and control of communicable diseases
  • Assist in the investigation of communicable diseases
  • Promote the effective sharing of information among the community health professionals, the schools and the Jefferson County Health Department
  • Review and update student health records
  • Attend and participate in faculty, staff and community meetings as a representative of the school healthier program
  • Participate in the school’s multi-disciplinary team evaluation process
  • Participate as the health professional in IEP and 504 meetings
  • Serve as the liaison between the school, student, parents and health care providers
  • Collaborate with principals and staff to assess, plan and maintain a healthy school environment
  • Coordinate and implement the school’s health screening program and follow-up activities
  • Coordinate and monitor compliance with state immunization laws
  • Assist in the development of health care plans for special needs students
  • Assist and provide health care class instruction
  • Maintain ongoing contact with school principal(s), teachers, aides, secretaries, cooks and custodians regarding health related issues
  • Identify and prioritize student who need individual health care plans
  • Administer first aid and emergency care by responding immediately
  • Monitor medication administration at the schools
  • Perform medication audits of schools’ medication logs
  • Ensure the delivery of school health services at assigned schools
  • Maintain confidential information in compliance with state nursing procedures, Jefferson County Schools’ procedures and the WV Department of Education’s procedures for the Collection, Maintenance, and Disclosure of School Records, and federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Maintain expertise by participating in relevant professional development
  • Coordinate referrals for various health problems to appropriate community resources and keep appropriate school staff apprised of the referral status
  • Assist with health related attendance problems
  • Complete an annual report and submit to the Coordinator of Student Support/Social Services
  • Participate on Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) School Team

QUALIFICATIONS: Certified School Nurse is defined as a registered professional nurse, who is licensed by the WV Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses (WV Code § 30-7-1, et seq.), who has completed A WV Department of Education approved program as defined in the WVBHE Policy 5100: Approval of Educational Personnel Preparation Programs (WV 126CSR114), and meets the requirements for certification contained in WVBE Policy 5202: Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional/Paraprofessional Personnel and Advanced Salary Classifications (WV 126CSR136) (hereinafter Policy 5202). The certified school nurse must be employed by the county board of education or the county health department as specified in WV Code § 18-5-22.

  • Hold current CPR certification.
  • Ability to adhere to appropriate safety, hygiene and personal health standards and maintain a safe work area
  • Ability to demonstrate courtesy and tact in interpersonal relations with staff and community members

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50 pounds and assist with lifting up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/ technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
