Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions: Deputy Sheriffs are commissioned officers who perform law enforcement duties throughout a county jurisdiction. In addition to the common job description, which includes executing warrants, traffic stops, and arrests, Deputy Sheriffs also respond to emergencies and conduct criminal investigations. As the primary law enforcement officers within the unincorporated areas of a county jurisdiction, Deputy Sheriffs must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the law and the community. Although deputies are not elected officials, they represent the Sheriff in many situations, so sensitivity to community issues may sometimes influence decisions. Deputy Sheriffs must be able to enforce laws and prevent crime; perform a variety of technical and administrative task in support of law enforcement services; perform all aspects of law enforcement duties including investigation, community services, administration and training; control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations.
Other Job Functions: Performs other related duties as directed.

Education & Experience
Education & Experience: High school diploma or G.E.D; must be a TCOLE licensed peace officer and may never had his/her licensed revoked or currently under any type of suspension.
Specialized Requirements: Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with a favorable driving record; be a U.S. Citizen; be at least 21 years of age; have no less than Honorable Discharge, if prior military service; be of good character and have a favorable work history; must not have a criminal record that would preclude hiring, as determined by TCOLE/JCSO.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the law and the community.
Equipment used: Firearm; dispatch radio; mainframe computer terminal; vehicle.
Working Conditions: Must be available to work all shifts (6am-6pm/6pm-6am days worked are 2 on/2 off, 5 on/5 off) including weekends and holidays; overtime when necessary to ensure proper staffing for safety and security. JCSO is an emergency first responder and does not evacuate during time of emergency declarations (i.e. hurricanes).
Physical Requirements: Duties require frequent running, walking, sitting, reaching, lifting, carrying, climbing, restraining prisoners, dealing with emergency situations including resistant prisoners, and must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
