SHER Deputy Sheriff

Objective:

To assist and carry out duties/responsibilities of the County Sheriff’s office in civil, criminal, and public service law enforcement.

Qualifications:
A. Education/Training:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent required, plus some additional law enforcement training preferred.

2. Must have a valid driver’s license.

3. Must be CPR and First Aid certified.

4. Within one year of hire, must successfully complete the Deputy Sheriff Act 2 Training in State College, PA. This is a 760-hour training. Any hire with prior Act 120 Training will complete a two-week waiver consisting of 80 hours of training.

5. Must qualify annually in firearms proficiency in accordance with County Firearm Policy.

B. Work Experience:

1. Prior experience in law enforcement or legal environment preferred.

Background Clearance:
Valid Pennsylvania State Police and/or FBI clearance.

8. Must possess the general knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and procedures.

9. Must possess the ability to overcome and control aggressive individuals.

10. Must possess the ability to safely control a crowd of people.

11. Must possess the ability to use firearms and make appropriate arrests when necessary.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
1. Must be able to sit, stand, and walk intermittently throughout the workday with frequent twisting, stooping, bending, reaching, grasping, and lifting/carrying objects weighing a maximum of 20 pounds necessary to carry out essential job duties.

2. Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of fingers/hands to simple movements of feet/legs/torso as necessary to carry out essential job duties.

3. Must demonstrate emotional stability and the ability to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position.

4. Must be attentive to detail.

5. Must be able to physically and mentally react quickly in the event of a disturbance or physical outbreak.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs routine law enforcement duties and makes arrests.

2. Assists and works with the general public, other county departments, and other law enforcement agencies within the county.

3. Receives docket writs, executions, summons, court notices, subpoenas, and other legal documents.

4. Serves bench, magistrates, and arrest warrants; writs, executions, summons, court notices, and subpoenas.

5. Provides security for Judges, courtroom, and courthouse offices.

6. Provides security for Clearfield-Jefferson County Regional Airport.
7. Conducts background investigations for other county positions.

8. Transports prisoners and mental patients to/from courts, mental hospitals, and various facilities throughout the state.

9. Licenses and regulates all firearm dealers in the county.

10. Monitors firearm sales within the county and conducts criminal history checks for firearm sales; maintains files and records of same.

11. Prepares “License to Carry” permits and conducts background checks.

12. Assists with maintaining law/order as needed during strikes, riots, or disasters.

13. Performs public service presentations, assists with mock trials, booths at fairs, etc.

14. Operates computers and other office equipment as needed.

15. Attends meetings and trainings as required to maintain competency.

16. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
1. Works indoors in adequate work space, lighting, temperatures, and ventilation.

2. Average indoor and outdoor exposure to noise, stress, and disruptions.

3. Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.

4. Travels frequently during all seasons and is exposed to outdoor elements and environmental conditions, including snow and icy driveways, and works with poor radio capability while on the road.

5. Works in conditions of potential outbursts of disruptive behavior from clients or consumers.

6. Subject to periodically work different shifts or on-call as required.

Job Type: Full-time
