Job Description

 

The Special Education Coordinator for the Extended School Year (ESY) and Intervention Programs provides leadership in developing and supporting the division’s special education ESY program and services, along with the Intervention Program.

 

Qualifications

 

Candidates should possess a master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university and be eligible for endorsement as a special education teacher, school psychologist, school counselor or school social worker.  Administration and Supervision endorsement preferred. The position requires a minimum of five years of experience working with children with disabilities in a school setting. Experience working in and knowledge of the purpose and function of the Extended School Year Program is required. Knowledge and experience using various methodologies with various ages of children and types of disabilities are desired.

 

Essential Functions

  • Determes vacancies, selection and assignment of all teachers and staff
  • Organizes and conducts pre-service orientation for all teachers and staff
  • Ensures facilities are available and prepared for summer learning, through coordination with building administrators
  • Facilitates student placements for ESY and Intervention programs by ensuring appropriate records are in place, assigning students to particular classes, coordinating communication between all appropriate personnel, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains an ongoing communication process with parents
  • Coordinates transportation needs, including buses and cabs, with ACPS’s  Office of Pupil Transportation 
  • Ensures staff provides instruction that is both appropriate and rigorous to all students, allowing for students with disabilities to maintain critical life skills as identified in student IEPs
  • Analyzes weekly teacher data collection on ESY IEP goals to ensure all students are maintaining progress; analyzes weekly Intervention data to ensure the effectiveness of the program
  • Facilitates substitute coverage, if needed
  • Provides crisis intervention, problem-solving on site to staff and students and communicates with building principal, when appropriate
  • Maintains records, both electronic and paper to support compliant and efficient ESY and Intervention programming which would include but is not limited to facilitating payroll requests, organizing the processing of purchases for ESY and Intervention, and reporting to parents of the progress of children served in ESY
  • Facilitates delivery of materials to ESY and Intervention sites and returns to teachers at base schools
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Specialized Instruction
  • Communicates regularly with Office of Specialized Instruction staff regarding the status of the program and individual students

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts

 

Work is primarily performed in a school setting with occasional lifting and other physical activities. Frequent travel to school sites throughout the city may be required. Attendance at meetings outside the normal hours may be required.

 

Evaluation

 

The performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.

 

Clearances:

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance

  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
