What Your Job Will Be Like
Perform multiple design engineering activities in support and development of high-performance electronics instrumentation for nuclear physics experimental apparatus and associated data acquisition systems for the 12GeV experimental programs. These design activities include, but are not limited to, circuit board designing, simulation, firmware development using industry VHDL tools, procuring and testing circuitry and managing wiring systems using CAD tools. Interaction with industry partners and assist in fabrication, diagnosis, debugging and installation of electronics related to particle detectors are the primary activities, and there are also activities related to the continued research and development of higher speed electronics for support of streaming readout technology.

In This Role You Will
- Develop, simulate, test and deploy algorithms and FPGA firmware for data acquisition modules.
- Develop and manage scheduling and provide appropriate documentation for projects of moderate complexity. This includes estimating costs, assess required resources and their availability in a timely manner for effective project performance.
- Manage the diagnosis, debugging, troubleshooting, testing and installation of boards, chassis and detector sub-systems using electronic test equipment and data acquisition systems.
- Lead the development, design, implementation and assembly for electronics boards and sub-systems.
- Design and test printed circuit boards and supporting circuitry using CAD tools, including schematic capture, layout, assembly, test, FPGA coding and procurement of components and services.
- Develop, implement and document testing strategies and protocols for electronics modules and sub-systems under computer control.
- Manage the full cycle of board, module and system development from concept through execution, including any required light mechanical fabrication in support of the electronic circuitry.
- Interface with physicists, engineers, firmware and software developers and technicians to verify/generate requirements and acquire feedback.
- Ensure documentation is complete and current.
- Responsible for projects involving multiple people and groups.
- Plans projects and tasks and leads technical staff to program completion.

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- 4 or more years relevant Experience

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Must have strong demonstrated skills in FPGA firmware and algorithm development for fast signal processing from particle detectors.,
- Must have demonstrated skills in advanced DAQ systems.,
- Must have strong background in circuit theory and devices.,
- Demonstrated experience with CAD software with emphasis on circuit design and simulation (SPICE), printed circuit boards and testing.,
- Must have strong skills in PC based testing software, such as LabView, and business software such as Word and Excel.,
- Independently perform advanced board level debugging, calibration and testing procedures.,
- DSP techniques and simulations using MatLab or other software.,
- HDL programming for FPGAs using Xilinx, Altera or other development software.,
- Experienced with electronic test equipment (Oscilloscope, Digital multi-meter (DMM), function generator),
- Familiarity with NEC regulations.,
- Perform high reliability thru-hole and SMT soldering and be familiar with PCB fabrication and assembly technologies.,
- Good oral and written communication skills and be able to work as part of a team with other technical and professional staff.,
- Must be able to use powered hand tools.,
- Ability to organize and prioritize projects and tasks under their direction.,
- Problem solving, organization and prioritization of tasks while working in a safe manner.,
- Knowledgeable in all areas of the group's scope with the demonstrated ability to achieve the required level of proficiency.,
