What Your Job Will Be Like

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division provides technical services to the entire lab to support ongoing accelerator operations and other lab initiatives. We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Cryogenics Group as a Mechanical Designer III, who is self-motivated and has a proven track record of generating complex designs related to process plants such as chemical, petroleum, and refrigeration facilities. The Mechanical Designer supports the design efforts of the 2 Kelvin cryogenic distribution system for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project. Additional contributions will support other designs such as nitrogen piping systems and warm helium piping systems inside the satellite plant buildings. The Mechanical Designer will be tasked to turn concepts and ideas into working assemblies and systems with independent thinking. The Mechanical Designer will be responsible for the layout and detailed design of heat exchangers, vacuum, and cryogenic piping according to ASME codes and engineering requirements. This position requires the designer to produce accurate, simple, and cost-effective fabrication documentation (3D modeling, assemblies, and orthogonal drawings) using NX/Teamcenter and AutoCAD.

In This Role, You Will

  • Create 3D models and layouts for cryogenic and warm piping systems.
  • Produce orthographic mechanical and fabrication drawings.
  • Perform and/or coordinate engineering and design work for specific projects.
  • Responsible for completing assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Using Siemens NX and AutoCAD software to create complex models and drawings of components and assemblies.
  • Develop concepts for working assemblies and systems with the guidance of engineers and senior designers.

Qualifications We Require

  • High School Diploma
  • 9 years of relevant experience. Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Must be proficient with 3D CAD, preferably Teamcenter and NX.
  • Must be able to produce and interpret complex mechanical designs.
  • Effective communicator both verbally and in writing
  • Work independently under general supervision.
  • Works as part of a team, taking direction from other team members to produce models and drawings.
