Position Description:
The School Nurse provides health services to students during the school day as outlined by the State Department of Education and the Jefferson Parish Public School System.
Scope of Responsibility:
Establishes a weekly routine of visits to schools, conducts health conferences for students with special health needs, trains staff on student health procedures, and assists in checking immunization records.
Reviews health and developmental history on all students, develops an Individualized Health Plan (IHP), notifies staff of any health needs, and implements appropriate accommodations when needed. Conducts vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other screenings on designated grade levels and refers to proper resources as necessary. Provides Breast Self Exam instructions to high school females as mandated by the State Department of Education.
Follows up on all students with suspected health problems, makes home visits as necessary, and provides health assessments for students who are ill or injured while at school. Serves as a health resource person to school staff and as a liaison between parent, school, and health community. Maintains complete health records on all school nurse activities. Counsels pregnant students on a routine basis in accordance with local school board policy. Performs all other duties assigned by the Director of Health Services and the Health & Social Services Executive Director.
Skills and Qualifications:
Seeks detail-oriented, independent self-starters with a commitment to raising student achievement and a record of high performance in challenging situations. Successful candidates will also demonstrate current Registered Nurse licensure with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, certification in CPR, and ancillary certification with the Louisiana Dept of Education.
