REPORTS TO: Community Programs, Camp Site Director and site
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential role of the Summer Camp Counselor/Junior Counselor is to provide care and supervision of the children in the summer camp program
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Work in conjunction with Site Director
2. Maintain CPR, First Aid and Medication Certification.
3. Assists staff members, answer routine questions.
4. Assists in the preparation of various reports.
5. Must have basic fundamental knowledge of computers, including excel program and
emailing.
6. Maintains records accurately and neatly
7. Collects and deposits monies on the day it is received, invoicing and recording parent
payments in MSB
8. Responsible for any shortages or losses in deposits
9. Report all thefts of Summer Camp fees/receipts to the Principal, the Camp Director and
the Finance Dept.
10. Submits weekly reports via emails to the Comm. Programs by following Mondays, last
week by Friday.
11. Collect all snack money and turn over to the schools account clerk daily
12. Provides own transportation for work related responsibilities
13. Supervise a group of children when not completing accounting responsibilities
14. Assist physically challenged students, including restrooms
15. Performs all other duties as assigned by the site director and/or Principal
WORK ENVIRONMENT / HOURS WORKED:
Summer Camp Counselors will work in a school setting, climate controlled environment and in outside areas which are subject to summer climate extremes. Work day consists of hours that are assigned by the camp director between 2.5 – 6 hours per day, according to Comm. Program Department/School Principal. Excessive absences could lead to suspensions and or termination.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Must be able to communicate in English both orally and in writing. Must have ability to accurately give and receive information and must be able to communicate successfully and pleasantly with students, parents and school personnel.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Computer, telephone, fax machine, calculator, copy machine, printers, and other appropriate office machines
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT
Must have abilities for standing ,bending, stooping, participating in camp activities, walking, and lifting up to 30 pounds is sometimes required. Must have sufficient mobility to move to various locations on the school site
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
Must be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions. Must be able to comply with state and parish regulations and school system guidelines
HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:
Must be able to work cooperatively with students, parents and school personnel. Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalency
Experience with computers, My School Bucks, Excel and email
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in counting, collecting and depositing large amounts of money
Ability to meet established deadlines and to work accurately
Ability to communicate effectively
ADDITIONAL CAMP STAFF RESPONSIBILITY
Camp Director - Review, then have each camp staff member sign, Responsibility Form and
Additional Camp Responsibility form. Please keep both original forms on file at your site.
1. A work schedule has been made by the camp director according to hours assigned by
Comm. Programs. Camp directors will assign each staff member their time accordingly.
Employee's hours are based on camper participation and can be reduced if
participation decreases. Either the camp director or camp acct. clerk must be at site at all
times.
2. Staff must follow and participate with camp duties such as crafts, inside and outside
games, play and field trips
3. Staff must not gather or sit in groups talking instead of assisting/monitoring camper.
Please be alert at all times.
4. Extreme loud talking and yelling is NOT ACCEPTABLE or necessary.
5. Only the camp director (or acct. clerk if director is not present) is responsible to discuss
issues or problems with the parent. (NEVER discuss problems in ear shot of other parents
6. All camp staff is expected to change any child with soiled clothing if additional clothing is
available.
7. Excessive tardiness or absences will be documented, to determine dismissal from the
program. Staff is not allowed to make-up lost hours due to absences.
8. Notify camp director as soon as possible when an absence is necessary.
9. The use of cell phones/texting/wearing blue tooth is strictly prohibited. Phone calls can
be made through the camp site phone, limit calls to 2 minutes.
10. Staff should wear tennis shoes at all times. No halter tops, spaghetti straps, tank tops,
flip flops or open toe shoes are allowed. Staff that reports to work in inappropriate attire will
be sent home for the remainder of the day.
11. All staff should be familiar with Camp Manual/Regular will all the rules in the camp
manual and parent camp manual
12. All staff is responsible to make sure only one child is in the bathroom at a time. A staff
member must be on duty outside of the bathroom during group bathroom breaks.
13. NO STAFF IS TO WORK OVER FORTY (40) HOURS PER WEEK DURING
REGULAR WEEKS OF CAMP. No staff is to work more than 32 hours the week of the 4th
of July Holiday. Camper participation determines staffing needs.
