EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE JEFFERSON PROTECTION AND ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICE DEPARTMENT.
This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.
Under the supervision of the JPAWS Division Supervisor - Veterinary Lead, the purpose of this position is to perform a variety of animal health care tasks at JPAWS. Work includes the inspection and monitoring of the physical condition of all animals kenneled to ensure basic animal care standards; the observation and evaluation of animal behaviors; and the performance of semi-technical medical functions to include conducting intake examinations, administering vaccinations, and the performance of routine laboratory tests. Performs medical and health care tasks on all animals. Follows all oral and written instructions in performing treatments and other procedures. Administers vaccines and medications; treats animals for worms, fleas and ticks; bathes and grooms animals; and performs semi-technical medical functions to include FELV/FIV testing, skins scrapes, diagnostic tests and lab work. Requires working at both the East Bank and West Bank shelter as needed. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference for those particular vacancies.Applicants must meet one (1) of the following four options:This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.
1. Current employment with the Jefferson Protection and Animal Welfare Service, permanent civil service status as a JPAWS Care Attendant II (or above), and at least one (1) year of verifiable, paid experience in the care and handling of animals in a medical veterinary setting; PLUS, current certification as an Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET) issued by the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine.

2. Attainment of an accredited Associate's degree (or higher) in Animal Health, Animal Science, or Veterinary Technology.OR
3. Attainment of an accredited Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences with at least twelve (12) hours of coursework related to animal science.OR
4. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; PLUS, at least two (2) years of verifiable, paid experience in the care and handling of animals in a medical veterinary setting.PREFERRED: Active registration as a Veterinary Technician (RVT) with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine.
