What are the responsibilities and job description for the MECHANICAL INSPECTOR I (5121) position at Jefferson Parish?
This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.The purpose of this position is to conduct field inspections on new construction, installations, alterations and additions to existing residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with existing standards, current adopted codes, and ordinances. Employee inspects proposed heating and cooling systems, equipment, installations, and components such as heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, HVAC and other related mechanical and gas appliances or systems. Issues violation notices of code violations requiring corrective action, conducts follow up inspections, testifies at legal proceedings as needed regarding inspections/violations. Writes inspection reports, records inspection fees and notices, logs daily activities, responds to questions from the public, contractors, property owners and others regarding mechanical and/or gas inspections and Building Permit related questions. Performs other related work as required. Position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference.
*Primary work location may be West or East Jefferson, but employee may be required to report to and work at West and/or East Jefferson locations as directed.
NOTE: Employees in this position will be required to obtain certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Mechanical Inspector or Commercial Mechanical Inspector prior to the completion of their probationary period.
- Possession of an active Mechanical Contractor’s license* issued by Jefferson Parish.
- Possession of an active Statewide Mechanical Work license issued by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC).
- Possession of an active Journeyman/Master Natural Gas Fitter license issued by the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana.
- A minimum of five (5) years of verifiable, paid experience performing gas pipefitting installations under the supervision of a Louisiana Master Natural Gas Fitter and/or HVAC installations under the supervision of a Louisiana Statewide Licensed Mechanical Contractor.
- Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status as a Mechanical Systems Operator or Air Conditioning/Heating Mechanic, supplemented by at least two (2) years of experience in that capacity.
Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing.
