Job Summary:
Under general supervision, the Bike Trails/Path Caretaker is responsible for keeping the Island’s bike trails and paths safe. Responsibilities include inspecting all bike trails and paths, taking corrective action on unsafe conditions by doing daily tasks such as edging bike paths, removing accumulated debris, removing encroaching vegetation and tree roots, and removing hazardous branches.
Description:
- Oversees and maintains the bike paths in a safe condition, interprets assignments, answers questions, and inspects the general condition of the bike paths.
- To keep bike paths and trails clear, utilize manual and power-operated equipment, including front-end loaders, toro workmen, pruners, weed-eaters, chainsaws, and blowers.
- Pressure washes porous concrete surfaces to ensure that they are properly draining.
- Patches holes in asphalt bike paths with cold patches and clean cracks, and fills with flexible filler.
- Adds additional soft surface materials to nonpaved porous bike trails to maintain a uniform riding surface.
- Places straw and mulch around the base of specified trees, plants, and shrubs to prevent the evaporation of water from the soil and the freezing of roots.
- Removes dead plants and debris, rakes areas, and removes trash/accumulated debris from bike path surfaces.
- Maintains bike paths in landscaped areas by keeping mulch and other materials in the proper location.
- Sprays herbicides to reduce encroaching vegetation on bike path surfaces.
- Assists the Roads and Grounds Crew as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years grounds keeping experience (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Must be reliable and punctual; regular attendance and punctuality are required.
- A driver's license is required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions:
- Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
- More than 50% of the typical workday will be spent standing, walking, reaching, lifting, grasping, and using repetitive wrists, hands, and finger motions.
- Between 25% and 50% of the typical workday will be spent stooping and crouching.
- Less than 25% of the typical workday will be spent climbing, balancing, kneeling, sitting, pushing, and pulling.
- Sensory abilities required are feeling, grasping, and touching, with between 25% and 50% of the time spent communicating, talking and hearing.
- Visual abilities to perform tasks require determining the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned and making general observations of facilities or structures.
- Required to perform work both inside and outside. Exposure to extreme heat, high humidity, occasionally adverse weather conditions, and occasional extreme cold.
- Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, exposure to chemicals, and subject to vibration.
- Will be exposed to oils and other fluids.
- It may be subjected to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, or poor ventilation. It may be subjected to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
- Noise levels are considered normal to loud.
